"Masterjam" was certified Platinum so it wasn't that underrated. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

This is my FAVE song from the album...
Overall, I'm not that crazy about the album, between Geroge Benson & Michale Jackson who got the bulk of Uncle Q's attention, I'd say this one had the sloppy seconds treatment,,,,I prefer Camouflage over it.

I agree, this album really isn't that great. It's not nearly as strong as the albums that came before it.It's obvious that Quincy was more focused on MJ's 'Off The Wall'.There are a few cool songs on 'Masterjam' but much of the music sounds formulaic."Do You Love What You Feel" is the highlight.

another problem: on a few tracks,Chaka's mighty vocals seem to be buried in the mix.

Agreed...Camouflage was a MUCH better record. It was poorly received at the time, but I spin that one more often than the earlier "classic" Rufus releases. Funk Is It's Own Reward

LOL!! Now I see Camouflage as the "throw away" album, Q's throw away's were way better then this album IMO.

I know I'm in the minority but Camouflage is my favorite Rufus album! Highlight, Losers in Love, True Love, Sharing The Love, Quandary...all classic joints! I just got it on CD last year along with Masterjam, which is not Quincy's best moment. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu

As far as "Masterjam" is concerned, Chaka sounded fantastic on this album. She makes you forget all about the original version of "Body Heat" with her smoldering performance. "What Am I Missing" seems to strike a chord with a lot of people. I wasn't that crazy about the later Rufus albums because Chaka was not the lead vocal on all of the songs. I once read because she was experiencing so much success as a solo artist, she simply wasn't showing up for some of the recording sessions with Rufus. Quincy said one time he had to wrestle her down to the ground and make her promise to start showing up to the "Masterjam" sessions. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! See told ya kit, most on org aren't feelin' Masterjam as much as the other Rufus albums. I personally feel that it's they're second best lp, only behind "Rufusized"

Masterjam is when they started to go with the motions instead of sticking with their own unique sound.
When Rags To Rufus, Rufusized, Rufus FT. CK, Ask Rufus and hell, even Street Player were released,,,they already coined their style. But since disco was all the rage(and I love it!) I guess it put a pressure on them to release a disco record,,,even though they clearly sound out of place doing it IMO. I heard that Chaka wanted to do the Rock/Jazz oriented thing, which didn't sit well with the record company nor the Rufus members(who already were experiencing personal clashes). Call me crazy, but give me their Chaka-less albums Numbers & Party Till You're Broke over Masterjam any day of the week [Edited 5/27/10 1:41am]

I just never got into those albums like the other ones, I still blast Masterjam and Rufusized weekly.

I just listened to this album again,to make sure that I wasn't being harsh in my assessment of it

Personally, I DISPISE the Masterjam album...I think its their weakest effort...Camoflauge was much better IMO...to me, Quincy had Rufus sounding way too polished and soul-less..IMO "Rufusized" was the pinnacle of the Rufus sound.
Not to say there arent some good songs on that album.....I love "Heaven Bound" and "What Am I Missing." "Live In Me" and "Do You Love What You Feel" are decent. "Any Love" sounds like a studio outtake from Chaka's solo album, yet its a tolerable tune. The rest of the disc is embarassing IMO

I agree.Quincy made them sound a little too polished and slick. My favorite Rufus and Chaka album is their 1975 self-titled disc...the one with "Sweet Thing".
