Talkin' Trash: Rock Star Insults That Still Sting

Rock star feuds are so much easier these days. Back in the day, an artist with a grudge had to air out the dirty laundry with a reporter, hoping the scribe would print the verbal jabs. But today an angry musician can take to the Internet and rant unedited. Here are some of the most scathing attacks in recent memory.

eek

Van Morrison Trashes the Beatles

The Diss: "The Beatles were peripheral. If you had more knowledge about music, it didn't really mean anything."

You won't find too many musicians knocking the Beatles. But, then again, Morrison has a reputation for being cranky. The Irish rocker, who wasn't much impressed with Elvis, and accused both Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger of ripping him off, told The New Yorker in 2009 that Americans had it wrong about the Fab Four

Joni Mitchell Trashes Bob Dylan

The Diss: "Bob is not authentic at all. He's a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake."

In April, Mitchell took exception when a Los Angeles Times reporter compared the two, saying, "Everything about Bob is deception. We are like night and day, he and I." The plagiarism accusation might stem from a New York Times article noting that Dylan had borrowed lyrics from a Civil War poet for his 'Modern Times' album.

Robbie Williams Trashes Noel Gallagher

The Diss:
"He's a mean-spirited dwarf."

The Gallagher brothers also on occasion have trouble with people who aren't each other. The boys in Oasis used to be friends with Williams, but in 2000 Noel referred to the pop singer as "the fat dancer from Take That," prompting Williams to mock Noel's height and invite him to fight. Later, Williams sent a funeral wreath with a note: "To Noel Gallagher, RIP. Heard your latest album -- with deepest sympathy."

Elton John Trashes Keith Richards

The Diss: "He's so pathetic, poor thing. It's like a monkey with arthritis, trying to go onstage and look young."

After John had changed the lyrics to his '70s hit 'Candle in the Wind' in 1997 to honor the late Princess Diana, Richards criticized his fellow Brit, saying John was "writing songs for dead blondes." In an interview with foreign journalists in Atlanta, John retorted that Richards was holding back the Stones.

Kelly Osbourne Trashes Christina Aguilera

The Diss: "She is one of the most disgusting human beings in the entire world!"

During 'The Osbournes' TV show, Kelly did a mocking imitation of Aguilera in 2002 and later made clear she wasn't a fan: "She has an amazing voice, but that doesn't change the fact that she's one of the world's biggest c----s. She looks like a f---ing drag queen." Aguilera said she could easily insult Osbourne but chose not to. "She must be insecure or something," Aguilera replied.

Moby Trashes Eminem

The Diss:
"I think he's a misogynist and a homophobe."

At the 2001 Grammys, Moby didn't hold back his feelings about the controversial rapper, sparking a feud that led Eminem to call Moby a "little girl" at the MTV Video Music Awards. Eminem upped the ante in his song 'Without Me,' calling Moby a "bald-headed fag." Moby later made up with Eminem, saying, "I think what's gotten me into trouble [is] not learning how to keep my mouth shut."

Carlos Santana Trashes Gene Simmons

The Diss: "He's not a musician, he's an entertainer."

In 2005, Santana suggested the Kiss mastermind wasn't worthy of musician status. "Kiss is Las Vegas entertainment, so he wouldn't know what music is anyway."

Boy George Trashes Madonna

The Diss: "I just think she's a vile, hideous human being with no redeeming qualities."

The Culture Club singer's 2005 autobiography, 'Straight,' took several stars to task. During promotional interviews, he was especially harsh on Madonna, saying, "There's nothing nice about her. I've never heard anyone say anything nice abut her at all."

I'm surprised that they didn't mention Sinead O Connor's blistering attack on Prince.Back in 1990,she visited him and they got into a heated altercation...

"His problem is that,I did a song of his ("Nothing Compares 2 U") without him being involved. He's jealous. And he did say to me that he wishes I had never done his song.I think that, frankly, that song saved his fucking ass.He was in serious financial trouble until that song happened."

I would partially agree with this. The Gene Simmons of the early-mid '70s was not a great musician but he was a capable songwriter. With a few exceptions (Revenge) the Gene Simmons of the '80s, '90s and '00s was content to recycle and relive past glories. Is Carlos Santana a better musician than Gene Simmons? Absolutely. I don't think anyone could credibly argue that point. However, even approaching their sixties Gene and Paul still put on a very entertaining show and ultimately why do people go to rock shows? To be entertained.

So strictly speaking Carlos Santana is wrong. Gene Simmons is a musician. Is he a virtuoso? No. Sure, you could argue that he is an average or maybe even a poor musician but he is a musician.

I think Gene, then as well as now, is 90% image and 10% musicianship IMO. Thats what I think Carlos was aiming at. To me Gene is capable of being a respectable musician, but instead he invested more stock on being a buffoon.

It shouldn't as a "diss" though, like the article pointed out. Nothing's wrong with entertainment.

Carlos Santana is a sell out

He's right about KISS. I've said this for ages. KISS doesn't make memorable songs, nor are they trend-setting musicians. No one goes around humming "Love Gun" or "Deuce". If you look at the unplugged session where there is no flash, pomp, and circumstance - they're rather boring.

Santana a sell out? I don't remember a Santana casket or toilet paper.

And what is a "sell-out" anyway? Making radio friendly music like he did with Clive Davis' guidance? He sold records, a LOT. KISS claims to be the biggest Gold selling band of all time. Yet what does that say? It says that no more than 500,000 people at any given time wants to hear their song/album.

If that's a sell-out, then Prince has done the same thing over and over and over again.

Kiss doesn't make memorable songs? Really? I admit, I am a big Kiss fan and obviously biased but I do think I can be objective when discussing them. Sure, much of their output since the '70s has been subpar but their first six studio albums are packed with great music. In 1996/1997 they were the top grossing tour, about 20 years past their prime. The music had at least something to do with that. Kiss never were, nor did they claim to be, the best musicians but as songwriters they were at one time capable of creating some great music. I would much rather listen to a band like Kiss who are average/poor musicians who write great songs rather than someone who is a phenomenal musician but a poor songwriter. Stevie Ray Vaughan comes to mind. The guy may well have been the best guitarist of his generation but as a songwriter he was very lacking. He was very much a product of his influences and less original musically than Kiss.

I don't think it is a small achievement to be the group with the most gold albums. To me that says that they cultivated and maintained a loyal fan base over a long period of time. In the long run isn't it better to have many gold albums over a long career rather than two or three blockbusters and then fading away?

Lily Allen Trashes Madonna

The Diss: "She might have meant something once, but I don't know many people my age who care."

The London-based pop star has made disparaging comments about several artists, which she admittedly chalks up to a lack of confidence. Still, when asked about Madonna's influence, Allen wasn't shy, saying in 2006, "I haven't got anything against her, but I don't think anything she's done since the early '80s has really been, like, wow."

I found it ironic that she made these comments about a UK pop singer, then that singer responded back to her, and she cried about it saying it was hurtful

can't dish it but can't take it lol
"We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Boy George goes clubbing ... his rivals

October 16, 2006 - 4:59PM

I just think [Madonna's] a vile, hideous human being with no redeeming qualities

On the attack ... Boy George speaks his mind about Robbie Williams, Madonna and Elton John.

On the attack ... Boy George speaks his mind about Robbie Williams, Madonna and Elton John.

Fresh from sweeping New York streets as punishment for using drugs, Boy George is back in Britain and spitting venom at rival pop stars.

In a documentary for Britain's Channel 4, the former Culture Club frontman derides Madonna as "vile". He also puts down Elton John as a drama queen, and rejects Robbie Williams's music as "terrible", the Independent newspaper reports.

The program, entitled The Madness of Boy George, also delves into troubled singer's dark side with revelations about his use of gay prostitutes and cocaine.

The 45-year-old was arrested for drug possession in New York and a court sentenced him to sweep the streets of Manhattan for five days in August, when he was besieged by news crews and paparazzi.

He described the punishment as "media service" not "community service" and clearly the very public humiliation did nothing to curb his acid tongue.

His worst shots were reserved for Madonna.

"I just think she's a vile, hideous human being with no redeeming qualities," he said, according to contactmusic.com.

"There's nothing nice about her. I've never heard anyone say anything nice about her at all.

And anyone that's ever met her she's been vile to.

"Vile, full of herself - so unspiritual. How has this woman got away with it for so long?"

On Robbie Williams's songs: "He could use my help. The last album was terrible. He's at that point where he's just throwing anything out. He needs another Angels or something really classy."

On musicals: "[People] always go on about 'Theatre is a dying art form and we must save it'. And then we just put on another Andrew Lloyd Webber re-run. It's tragic."

On whether Elton John is a gay role model: "If you're a common-or-garden homosexual then maybe, but not if you're a fag like I am. I'm not an Elton John type of gay. I'm not vanilla" (into boring sex).

disbelief Just a bitter, nasty old man.

Beth Ditto Trashes Katy Perry

The Diss: "She's a boner dyke."

In a 2009 interview with Attitude magazine, the Gossip frontwoman and out lesbian admitted she wanted to start a band feud with Perry, whose 'I Kissed a Girl' infuriated her. The problem, Ditto says, is that the song is about a straight female who kisses women to turn men on. Said Ditto, "I'm so offended. She's just riding on the backs of our culture, without having to pay an y of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all."

Yes, that song is offensive to Lesbians and I hope that shitty new song with Snoop Dogg is the first of many flops.

Pink Trashes Kanye West

The Diss: "Kanye West is the biggest piece of s--- on Earth."

When West crashed Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, a throng of celebrities unleashed a Twitter tirade against the hip-hop impresario, who suggested that Beyoncé should have won Swift's award. Pink was the harshest, tweeting that had he interrupted her speech, she would have thrown down: "I think he's just a waste, he's an idiot, he's a toolbox."

Elton is no better. He's just as bitchy and gossipy as anyone. Even George Michael has pulled back on his friendship w/ Elton because (more than once) Elton has talked about GM in public (so much for privacy in a friendship). GM's stated more than once about Elton hanging with gossipy and talky homos, and how he doesn't really hang with those type of people.

Nah, Williams sent the flowers after the 'fat dancer' comment and later offered to take Liam on in the boxing ring with the money raised going to charity. I think Robbie -like Damon Albarn before him- found Liam's belligerant mocking to be quite a weight on his shoulders eventually.

I think Boy George has just heard and seen inside the industry what many outside it have always suspected of Madonna

Financial trouble? Really? He just got off doing "Batman", which I'm sure he was paid well for, no? Maybe he was spending a lot (he probably still does). I've never heard The Family's take on the song, but I really dislike Prince's take on it. Boring. It's sad that Prince couldn't hear what a great job she did with the track?

I'm not the biggest Robbie Williams fan (I own his hits and "Rudebox", both of which I like but don't love....he could have done much stronger material with PSB for example), but that wreath stunt...the man is funny!
