Betty Wright and Millie Jackson, unsung soul ladies to the max

I have often though that Millie Jackson and Betty Wright are a part of the r&b divas that do not get their just fruits.
Both are dynamic stage performers with a great sense of personality when it comes to entertaining an audience.
I think Millie is deejaying in Atlanta now, and Betty has been doing a few dates here an there. Wright was involved in the production of the debut Joss Stone album in 2006.

Millie lives in Atlanta and does a radio show in Dallas.

I agree with you about these ladies. I really feel that these ladies are trailblazers on so many different levels. They bauked the industry a LONG time ago. Whether it be Millie using profanity or Betty telling her view of life. Betty was also one of the first "major" independent artists that I knew. She crossed over and has had some big success with songs like "No Pain, No Gain" and "After the Pain".

I wish u guys could hear Millie's radio show. Sometimes, she discusses her friendship with people like Betty and Denise Lasalle. She tells some really good stories of how Betty had to fight record companies and of how she won her case against Dr. Freeze and Color Me Badd for sampling her work without proper clearance.

Unfortunately, no. I have begged and pleaded with KKDA-AM to stream. They won't do it. They put their money into their FM stations, K104 (k104fm.com) and KRNB (krnb.com).

Outside of Millie, the station is really good. They play mostly classic soul (stuff u don't hear anymore hardly anywhere), jazz and gospel.

I hate those two songs.....too late 1980s sounding. My favorites from her are her 1970s songs "The Clean Up Woman", "The Babysitter", "Secretary", "Tonight Is The Night", "Shoo Ra, Shoo Ra", "It's Hard To Stop (Doing Something That Feels Good To You)", etc.

I wish u guys could hear Millie's radio show. Sometimes, she discusses her friendship with people like Betty and Denise Lasalle.

Denise LaSalle is a bad bitch. She's in her 70s and talks plenty of shit. It just goes to show that you can still be old as hell and continue to be nasty as hell. Some of her jams as recent as the 2000s has her singing about "lick it before you stick it" and "you better work on that little man in the boat". She had me rolling when she sang about getting a man that can "make my coochie snap, crackle, and pop". lol

I remember this quote from Millie which stuck in my mind, its from her chapter of Soulful Divas.

She said something to the affect that If awards and praise could come to whoever got a good head between their shoulders without any drama they've been through, I'd get the bulk of those.

It is sad, if you're DRAMA FREE, you're really an outcast in the entertainment business.

That is a really good quote.

I never knew how knowledgeable Millie really was. She does not have a manager. If you want to book her for a show, you call HER and no one else. If you want to sample one of her songs, you call HER to get the clearance and she talks to YOU.

I love hearing her tell stories of being on the road and all of the different celebrities she would interact with.

I've met her in person in Newark airport with her daughter Keisha once, to call her a lady of grace would be a huge understatement, and she's FAR from the wild outrageous woman portrayed in her music, she's actually very mellow,,,but the sense of humor was still there lol

The minute she & momma struck a conversation, you'd think both ladies were old girlfriends,,,,they talked shit about EVERYBODY & EVERYTHING and I sat there gawking with a heavy tongue in my mouth disbelief lol

I definitely believe it. On her show, she is the exact same way.

I love how she plays on words. For instance, here in Dallas, one of the busy streets that comes up during traffic reports is Arapaho st. Imagine Millie saying "stop saying that on my show before I "wrap-a-ho" your ass".

I've always loved Millie, although I had to sneak and listen to her records when I was a kid. smile

I didn't discover Betty until I was in high school when she put out that amazing CD "Mother Wit" with "No Pain, No Gain" and "After the Pain". I still play that CD on a regular basis.

nod Millie Jackson is one of my favorites. Honestly though, while I love her bold, tell-it-like-it-is attitude, I'm not a big fan of her really crass material of the 80s, but rather of the string of respectable soul albums she had in the 70s.

I've yet to get deep into Betty Wright, but it's been on my to-do list for a while now.

I discovered Millie in 1979 when I was a kid.My dad had one of her 8-track tapes ('A Moment's Pleasure').I stumbled across it,played it and I couldn't believe what I was hearing! It wasn't the type of stuff that kids should be listening to,lol.

Yes. But, her raunchy records are tame compared to the "music" young children are listening to now. eek
