What is it with the mf word in hip hop

Do you all get tired of rappers using the word motherfucker in rap songs. Its been used since gangsta rap started in the late 80s with Ice T and NWA, and now its still going, why, whats it proving. Reminds me of a line from the Fugees The Score rapped by Lauryn "And after all that logic, I add a motherfucker so you ignant niggas hear me". Even an intelligent rap artist like Kanye West, its motherfxxk this and motherfxxk that.
Seriously its time to start cleaning up rap music and make it positive again like it was in the early days and fun like White Lines. Did Mellie Mel or Grandmaster Flash have to swear in that to get his message across, hell naw!
So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

I don't think it's any different from movies with an R rating.

On most albums like that, there's a warning on the cover saying Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.

I wouldn't necessarily listen to the Chronic with my mother.

The way you're saying they need to "clean up" rap lyrics, which is pretty much censorship.

If you come across an album that has that Parental Advisory warning. Don't buy it. Or get the clean version.

1. The word "motherf***er" has been taken for granted since the days of Richard Pryor. It's not just rap & hip-hop guilty for using the word too often, but also all of the entertainment industry (especially comedy).

2. As for Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five , they never used the word "motherf***er" in their songs. But they have used the word "fag" & "fag hag" back in the early 1980's. Remember, THIS was in a time when entertainers (especially Eddie Murphy) were able to get away with sexual slurs in music and/or on film.

Never really understood this "selective morality" attitude rolleyes

Hip Hop is merely an extention of HOLLYWOOD, you name it; misogyny, homophobia, sexism, drug/violence glorification and every negative trait you could think of.

Does that make it ok? Of course not.

But the way you refuse to generalize hollywood with those traits, the same TOKEN should be applied to hip hop.

Prince built a whole song around the word. He must have set a world record the amount of times it was said in Sexy MF.

It got a pass from me back then, but as i get older, i find i'm not a fan of profanity for the sake of it.

well known George Carlin, perfected what is perhaps his best-known routine, "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television", recorded on Class Clown album in 1972.

In this period he also perfected what is perhaps his best-known routine, "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television", recorded on Class Clown album in 1972.

imo eek it seems like a marm-farkin' judgemental double edged sword that swings both ways at best. "wake up 6"

here's a bit of history on the origin of the word "fuck."

found at: http://sanityfound.wordpr...ear-words/ (interesting reading)

Titled: The Origin of Swear Words

excerpt:
The word fuck, much like shit (and actually the majority of common curse words), came from languages with a Germanic background. It is believed that it came into our language from the Dutch around the 15th century. The word was so taboo that a small amount of documents remain that would allow us to have a better understanding of its origins. The reason that little evidence remains was that people at the time were too afraid to write the word down.

how the term got stuck to the word "mother," is yet to be researched eek

'To be profound or profane, that is the question.' hmmm

Perhaps the most widely cited reason for the inclusion or usage of profanity in any artistic medium is the desire for realism. To speak in a real way.. how people speak in their private lives, in anger, telling an off color joke, speak of a sexual taboos, or whatever. I don't take issue with this but I do believe we should have boundaries... an ongoing conversation about the differences between a profound piece of art and a profane piece of garbage.

Those boundaries for me have always been 4 things: 1) Is this usage appropriate for the setting. 2) Does this usage achieve the message you like to purvey. 3)Is the profane term used because no other will suffice. 4) Risk isolating the audience.....

Tony makes a great point about Richard Pryor in his use of the word, mf. Many comedians or imitators who came after him mistakenly or willfully thought his style of comedy was just standing on stage cussing for an hour. If you stripped that word from Mr. Pryor's act he was saying a lot of profound things, unlike his imitators who cussed for 45 mintues for shock value stake. I mentioned this a couple of months ago and a fellow org got really angry when I criticized artist who have been willing to embraced and promote, the lowest common denominator. "We" should know better.....

Stop complaining and listen to something else.

You cant just make a generalization based upon a few commercial "gangsta" rappers.

I wouldnt really consider Kanye an "intelligent rap artist" either.

For

For
Unlawful
Carnal
Knowledge

by Van Halen

link: http://en.wikipedia.org/w..._Knowledge

For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (also known as F.U.C.K.) is the ninth album by the American heavy metal/hard rock band Van Halen, released in 1991. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart, and maintained the position for three weeks. The album's title came from lead singer Sammy Hagar, who wanted to push the issue of censorship with naming Van Halen's album with a vulgarity, stating, "That's when censorship was a big issue. I wanted to name the album just Fuck." Hagar eventually backed away from the outright vulgarity after he was told by his friend, former world lightweight boxing champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, that the word "fuck" was an acronym for the phrase "for unlawful carnal knowledge" (though this is generally considered a false etymology). Their tour promoting the album was named F.U.C.K. 'n' Live.

the album title and tour was endorssed by the rock n roll van halen followers en masse

-----

here's another: From Guns N Roses ---- Use Your Illusion II album September 17, 1991

title of the track:
Shotgun Blues

here's the lyrics to the last stanza/chorus lines:

I got the shotgun blues, shotgun blues
I said I don't know what I did but I know I gotta move
I got the shotgun blues, shotgun blues
I can't stay here forever, I got too much here to lose
I got the shotgun blues, shotgun blues
Listen motherfucker, you're about to pay your dues
I got the shotgun blues, shotgun blues
If you're goin' up against me then you know you're gonna lose
I know, I know, I know, I know
"You think anyone with an I.Q. over 15 would believe your shit, fuckhead"
Nothin' but a fuckin' pussy

the rockers also have used mf-er in their recordings, and in live concerts they still do nod wake up 6 eek
