George Harrison Film Planned For 2011

May 17, 2010

For his latest endeavor, premier cinema genius and frequent music connoisseur/documentarian Martin Scorsese is set to direct the forthcoming George Harrison documentary entitled Living In The Material World: George Harrison.

The film has been in the works since 2007, and is now being shopped around in Cannes for studio backing, which, if real life is anything like Entourage — and it is — will prove most felicitous for Scorsese.

Scorsese enlisted the help of Harrison’s widow Olivia to co-create the documentary, which will contain interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Eric Idle, Tom Petty, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector.

The doc will focus heavily on Harrison’s spiritual side, but will span his entire time with the Beatles to his death in 2001.

Scorsese says he hopes to release his George Harrison documentary next year, and is promising plenty of unseen footage and unheard songs.

Previous rock docs Scorsese helmed include The Last Waltz (The Band), No Direction Home (Bob Dylan), and most recently Shine A Light (The Rolling Stones), all of which have set the bar outrageously high for the Harrison film, but let’s face it, this is some star-studded stuff here between director, material, and subject. I’ll be there opening night with bells on.

Sounds cool, thanks for posting. I wonder what Eric Clapton will have to say.

woot! I was just thinking about George yesterday and how under-utilized he was as a songwriter when he was a Beatle... and yet, While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my all-time favorite Beatle tracks.

He & Clapton were really close, you can see Clapton talk about George on the Concert For George DVD, as well as lead the band.

I'm excited for this, the Beatles may be overexposed, but George Harrison is not so much.

Way past overdue...very underrated member of the Beatles. Lennon and Paulie always got the attention.

He is very underrated I agree.. but who would disagree on why Paul and John got all the attention.. for obvious reasons they had the bulk of the music and they were the definite strong arms of the group.

awesome news... i've been listening to George quite a bit lately. Love his stuff both w/ the Beatles and solo. All Things Must Pass is one of the great albums of the 70's.

I have listened to Cloud Nine more than any other solo album by any of the Beatles. There are some great tracks on that one.
