What are the top 5 smoothest soul albums? Let me define smooth in my book.
Something that sounds very melodic and relaxing. Doesn't demand too much attention or strain the ear with complex arrangements, etc. (In other words as brilliant as Prince's "shhh!" is from the Gold experience, I don't want to be accosted by drumb solos and such). I'm thinking more along the lines of Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite or even Sade (although I don't like her voice very much). But something nice and relaxing to take the edge off. I'm terribly unfamiliar with the genre so any advice would be great.

I think Maxwell drew his inspiration from all of those artists/albums I mentioned. Hope you like them.

George Benson - Breezin'
Will Downing and Gerald Albright - Pleasures of the Night (one of my favorite albums)
Queen Latifah -The Dana Owens Album
Duke Ellington - Plays Standards
anything by Boney James Isaac Hayes - Ellie's Love Theme (a song, not an album) Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

Dana Owen album? That doesn't even rate in the top 100 of that year, let alone forever. I'd add Meshell's Bitter as a recent smooth soul album legend. Space for sale...
