Like M.I.A., Joanna Newsom isn't buying into the Lady Gaga hype. In a recent article in The Guardian, the indie singer-songwriter-harpist had some choice words for the world's most fashion-forward pop star: "I'm mystified by the laziness of people looking at how she presents herself, and somehow assuming that implies there's a high level of intelligence in the songwriting. Her approach to image is really interesting, but you listen to the music, and you just hear glow sticks. Smart outlets for musical journalism give her all this credit, like she's the new Madonna Although I'm coming from a perspective of also thinking Madonna is not great at all. I'm like, fair enough: she is the new Madonna, but Madonna's a dumb-ass!"

Who knew Newsom had that kind of venom inside of her?! Not even Joanna herself, apparently, because she quickly realized the quote was a bit much, and later sent an e-mail to The Guardian clarifying-- though not taking back-- her statement:

"I may have contradicted myself. My problem isn't actually with Lady Gaga. But there's not much in her music to distinguish it from other glossy, formulaic pop. She just happens to wear slightly weirder outfits than Britney Spears. But they're not that weird-- they're mostly just skimpy. She's fully marketing her body/sexuality; she's just doing it while wearing, like, a 'fierce' telephone hair-hat. Her sexuality has no scuzziness, no frank raunchiness, in the way that, say, Peaches, or even Grace Jones, have-- she's Arty Spice! And, meanwhile, she seems to take herself so oddly seriously, the way she talks about her music in the third person, like she's Brecht or something. She just makes me miss Cyndi Lauper. I shouldn't have called Madonna a dumb-ass. Her music and she have just gotten so boring to me, this last decade. I think maybe she doesn't hold her money very gracefully, the way some people can't hold their drink. But one thing she is surely not is dumb."

Strong words. You could argue that Gaga's success in making people like M.I.A. and Joanna Newsom hopped up enough to consider the idea of art and talk out of turn in interviews basically fulfills her purpose. She's a provocateur, and it seems to be working.

’I'm mystified by the laziness of people looking at how she presents herself, and somehow assuming that implies there's a high level of intelligence in the songwriting”

I could not agree with the above comment more. If you want to listen to Gaga music as just fun dance music that is fine but we you see critics and fans analyzing her lyrics as if they have deep meaning you start to wonder what people on smoking.

I am a Prince fan but a lot of P’s music is about screwing. Nothing really that deep about a lot of it and would crazy to try and make some of the songs out to be more that what they are.

c'mon people its rock n roll people, like all forms art there are people going to have their opinions. its a shame thought that other people(like those who defended gaga) would take umbrage at the fact to what newsom said, that is her opinion and her everyone is titled to their own. seriously tis just music and criticize just listen to them and then move on

and for those who haven't heard of newsom, her lyrics are wonderful works of modern poetry in pop music...check her out.

I don't see the problem - Newsome is speaking intelligently about a certain aspect of music/product today. She didn't say anything that could possibly construed as unpleasant or offensive (she said Madonna was a 'dumb-ass' but retracted it immediately) - she merely implied the music of Lady Gaga (and Madonna) does not seem to have much depth to it and it's an example of style over substance.

That's not really such a controversial opinion is it?

And IMO, "This Side of the Blue" is greater than anything Madge or Gaga have done combined.

As much as I don't like Lady GaGa's music, I'm about SICK & TIRED of all the "crusade" against the woman by her fellow peers and not enough of action to back it up.

You find her music subpar? COOL! I agree. Now, how about giving the folks some ALTERNATIVE to choose from? Save the energy for producing music instead of yapping.

It does not make Newson's opinion wrong because she can't do any better. It is her opinion and Gaga needs to have a thick skin and some of her fans need to get one as well.

Who said it was? confuse We AGREE with the woman,,,hell, we agree with EVERYBODY who had something to say about GaGa,,,,

And NOW, It doesn't make us wrong either for being bored with all the yakkity when there's nobody stepping to the plate and bringing something to challange her, musically. At least, Grace Jones delivered in her latest album(unlike the rest).

It has been established that everybody can talk a good game,,,untill its TIME to bring something to the table. The pattern has gotton redundant at this point.

I listened to the "Sprout" song and kinda liked it.

I also kinda like that she blurted her truth about Madonna out; sucks that she couched the statements after the fact.

But I think it's a pure crap move to jump on Lady Gaga's clit - a contemporary of Newsom's who is trying to make her own way in the world. Gaga can't help that there was such a dreary lack of intrigue and excitement present on the pop music scene when she came on - it seems to have brought on this microscope-like examination of her work. Cuz, No, Lady Gaga does not bring ground breaking intensity to the table. But she does bring quite a bit of talent and interest that somehow gets discounted when the conversation turns to her place in the firmament. The SNL performance was outrageous.

And therein lies the problem, if you gonna say something against an artist, either stick to it or shut up. Why when anyone says about another artist and a fan club so devoted to that artist that the person attacked that that person is pushed to either apologize or recant his or her statements. Don't make sense. Stick to what you know, if not, then shut up because you ain't got no business to talk then if you're gonna do all of that.

It's like if someone says something bad about somebody and someone close to the one that got talked about comes over your house and threatens to cut your balls off, then you're kinda forced to "go along with the crowd". And in Joanna's instance, she's joining the "I'm sorry I said that" crowd.

India joined the same club. After initially going off against the "Bad Romance" video, she had to make a long rant on how she loved Gaga and how her fans immediately got what she said wrong. She sounded like she was apologizing to them. confused

When someone contradicts themselves, you wonder if they really mean what they say or they just love the way they hear themselves. lol Grace obviously was like "I don't wanna talk about her! talk to the hand " lol

Soul Alive who from his comments seems to think since Mrs. Newsome can't bring the goods to the table so she should keep her opinion to herself.
I disagree. I don't think it matters if Newsom can't bring it like Grace Jones (the original Lady Gaga) Mrs. Newsom can say she sucks and I can say Gaga sucks and I have no musical talent whatsoever. It is an opinion.

Well lets be honest there is no way you can compare what Joanna is doing to what the other 2 are. Joanna is on a whole different plane with her artisty. She's not putting down gaga or madonna as much as the masses who basically worships shit.

understood, which makes it all even more odd that she's commenting on Madonna or Lady Gaga at all. and if she was asked about them, wouldn't the appropriate response be "have you heard my music? what does that have to do with me?"
