Well I suppose Elvis' influence is still so strong after all these years that it's easy to rebel against it and think "what's all the fuss about". I'm not a big fan but he did change the way the masses viewed rock and roll. He must've been doing something right.

No
In the same way that The Beatles aren't or Dylan or even Prince Here are people who stand head and shoulders above the rest in terms of influence. Yes, Elvis recorded a lot of shit, and his film career was a joke, but the Elvis of 56 changed it all. Impossible he could be over-rated.

APPLAUSE!!! So many people are quick to say an artist is overrated when they are simply just over-exposed. Elvis influenced so many and changed music in his day and age. The man is the KING. He has some really beautiful songs. There is no f-ing way he is overrated...no way.

Most overrated artist eva, notice the word 'artist' not musician, he never wrote any of his hits or songs. He could bearly play a guitar (2 cords). He was the 1st manufactured artist.

Indeed! People forget he possessed an absolutely incredible voice, and i don't mean technically, he just sounded great. Everyone should own a copy of The Sun Sessions, it's a lesson in great Rock N Roll.

A person who sells over 1 billion records worldwide is not overrated. Hopefully black folks will eventually realize that. Who cares if he couldn't write songs.he chose not to. So what. There are no rules to being a a rock and roll legend. He could play guitar and piano by the way.
His recent No.1 hits collection just sold around 10 million. That is not an overrated performer. You hate him? Why? That makes no sense. What did he do to deserve you're hate? he was one of the nicest guys around. People like that don't deserve to be hated. Prince has wrote great songs , but he can't touch Elvis when it comes to singing. The beatles, The Stones, Dylan, all bad singers. Does that lessen them in the history of rock and roll. No. Then why should the fact that Elvis did not write songs be considered a negative. Makes no sense. He was not manufactured by anyone. All that talent was there before he ever signed a contract. Would you people do some damn research. If he was manufactured, then every performer who has ever stepped on stage was manufactured. Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran more interesting? HA!!! Ask someone on the street who they are. They wouldn't know. Next. Little Richard and berry peaked in the 50's. Elvis is dead, so people should get over him? Jimi Hendrix is very dead, Miles Davis is very dead, some of the greatest artists of all times are dead. Get over it? That's very closeminded. Here is a list of the Gold and Platnium records, that Elvis just received yesterday.. His NO.1 hits collection went Platnium in Africa, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand. It went Double Platium in Brazil, Finland, Spain, Sweden. It went Triple Platium In New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom, and the U.S. It went 6 times Platnium in Canada. It went Gold in Korea, Mexico, Portagal. Overrated? Ha. Tell them that. If you are not a fan, fine, but don't start this overrated crap and talk about things you know nothing about. Listen to his huge catalogue of music, watch the concerts etc, and then say it but until then...

i will ignore this... Who cares if he couldn't write songs.he chose not to. So what. There are no rules to being a a rock and roll legend.
if someone never actually writes a song, i don't think you can just assume that they chose not to write songs... you would be more correct to assume that if they had once written songs and then stopped... if there was never evidence of songwriting, you would more likely assume that they could not write songs... He could play guitar and piano by the way. of course, he could... but barely adequately... . . . . . . i think that the ultimate importance of elvis cannot be denied... however, i think that in some ways people have blown elvis out of proportion... when people make him out to be the consummate musical artist of all-time, i think he is being overrated... this is because he didn't write songs, and didn't play any instruments well, among other things... however, you could make a very strong case that elvis was consummate vocalist... he could sing virtually any style of music and make any song sound as though it were his own... and that's no small feat... very few artists have the ability to do this (joe cocker, aretha franklin and a few other soulful folks come to mind)... i don't think people hate elvis, so much as they're just tired of being told that he is the end-all be-all of rock music... however, anyone that doubts his talent would be well-served by picking up the "#1s" collection, "memories: the 68 comeback special," his debut, his sun recordings, or the the 1969 recordings from memphis... the man no-doubt had talent and soul... i just think some people are annoyed by the fact that he is touted as the alpha and omega of rock music... I'm no expert, but the way I see it there was very little competition back in them days. I think his stuffs great but maybe he's a bit over rated. I much prefer Prince. Prince has just done so much more for the world of music, but because people would rather look at a big smooth looking guy like Elvis than a 5ft2" dude in high heels people just don't seem to notice.
At least that’s my opinion. I don't claim to be the god of pop music knowledge.

No, he didn't. What he said was that Elvis died the day he went into the Army. Which was then and is today, complete bollocks. Lennon had a knack for talking shit, this was yet another of his bullshit soundbites. Elvis recorded his best songs between 67 and 71, to say his songs after 58 were "shitty" is your opinion, but a foolish one. Elvis inspired a generation, Lennon's, and completely revoltionised popular music. Whether or not you like Now or Never isn't relevant. The song is shit, but to use that as an illustration of all his work post 58 being shitty is silly.

I love Elvis. I know he wasnt a talented musician, he didnt write his own songs, but his impact cannot be denied. He changed modern music.
He definitely produced vast quantities of shit songs and films, and I have no interest in him beyond his greatest hits albums, but suspiscious minds is one my all time favourite songs.

"Elvis recorded his best songs between 67 and 71" if you don't like rock n roll it's true it you do that's boring pompous mainstream songs
"Elvis inspired a generation, Lennon's, and completely revoltionised popular music" Chuck Berry did too & better and I don't care about the sociological blah blah the title of the thread is "Is ELVIS overrated? " my answer is yes [This message was edited Mon Jan 13 10:43:37 PST 2003 by jnoel]

I'm old enought to remember Elvis was a joke the last few years before his death. Dying young (40's) does wonders for the way you are remembered. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
