A few years ago,three of the original members (Candi,Maxi and Cheri) were touring with Val Young as lead singer.They even recorded a new single "What U Give"



As for JoJo...she continues to tour with two new girls who were never part of the original group.She bills herself as "JoJo of the Mary Jane Girls".


Her performances are great,but it would be nice if all four original members could work out their differences and go on a reunion tour together.

Everytime I hear her mention I Rick James showed no mercy when he talked about her in his book.

Knowing how biased he was against artists he resented, I'd love to her side of the story.

Yep,Rick James really trashed her in his book.He referred to her as "ugly duckling" I don't know what happened between them,they were really close at one point.He even did a duet with her on his 1997 'Urban Rapsody' CD and everything seemed to be cool.For her part,she's never said anything bad about him.When I saw her in concert a few years ago,she mentioned Rick James favorably.

Yes, Val Young is STILL spreading her mis-representation/lies about being The Original Mary Jane Girls in her show to promoters, along with Original MJG Candice "Candi".Its pretty sad! That one of Rick James' "protoeges" is'nt happy with her own "Success" that she has to lie by telling false stories, promoting her show fraudulantly to promoters, and just plain out ruining the legacy of The Mary Jane Girls that JoAnne "JoJo" McDuffie (The Original Lead Singer of The Mary Jane Girls) has worked her ass off creating.
Val Young was NEVER considered, NEVER participated, NEVER linked and NEVER sang with The Mary Jane Girls back in the day. Or Any Day at all. Actually JoJo had to loan her vocal talent to Val for her debut LP SEDUCTION. The album actually ain't bad (considering it sounds like the songs are missing Cool Out/Party Side tracks from the
Mary Jane Girls LP released in 1983.
But, the album did not impact much recognition. She did make a couple television stops to sing "If You Should Ever Be Lonely". That was it.
I don't recall ever hearing of Val on tour or even getting to perform as an opening act for RJ, The MJG, Process & The Doo-Rags or Teena Marie. I understand that nobody in Slick Rick's camp was ever very fond of Val. Besides Candice Ghant.
Her second LP PRIVATE CONVERSATION was a No hitter. MOTOWN's Gordy label had nothing to do with it. The LP was released on the Ahmerst Record label that showcased older acts from the late 60's/70's like The Stylistics.
BUT, before ALL this she was excused & dis-missed by George Clinton at a rehersal with the REAL and actual Brides of Funkenstein. Val showed up to the rehersal & decided to audition her vocal talent that made No impression on Mr. Clintion! She was asked to leave. This is fact.
AGAIN... Val Young was NEVER considered, NEVER participated, NEVER sang with The Brides of Funkenstein either. This is a fact!

Well here it is.
Shes managed to keep these lies on the sly about her "coming up" in the industry. Now one of her stories is in fact a fact! She did briefly sing background vocals for The Gap Band. Thats the extent of that fact.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Val Young is a great background/hook singer. Shes proved herself at that singing on everybodys hook from Too $hort to Tupac. But, the front woman of The Mary Jane Girls she is not.
She has her own body of material she could perform, but insists on touring as
The Mary Jane Girls. Her shows are few, here and there with Candi. If she performed in an un-tricky manner maybe by billing herself as Val Young & Candi of The Mary Jane Girls it would be okay. But, not when shes deliberetly lying to concert promoters, industry people and especially the fans!!!
So the purpose of this is to educate. Not hate.

I gotta say,I used to have alot of respect for Val Young.I like her debut album 'Seduction' and I always felt that she was underrappreciated and deserved alot more recognition than she received.I even did a few threads about her.However....it is wrong of her to deceive fans of the Mary Jane Girls in this manner She should know better.

I have a funny story to share

Every year in my area,we have these Old School R&B concerts.It features ten or eleven acts....artists like Evelyn Champagne King,The Manhattans,The Delfonics,Zapp,etc.JoJo has appeared on many of these shows.It's just her and two other girls who were never part of the original group (see the clip posted above).Most of the time,her show runs smoothly.She and the girls perform the three hits ("Candy Man","All Night Long" then "In My House").But at one show in the late 90s,one of the girls was clueless.She was a blonde and very ditzy.Before the beginning of "In My House",all three ladies turn their back to the audience,with their heads facing the floor,waiting for the music to start.The blonde chick didn't seem to know what to do next! We could see her whispering to JoJo ("Is this where I should be?!").JoJo didn't say a word,but I can tell that she was thinking "Bitch,get into position and shut up!" It was hilarious.It's obvious that many of these chick are amateurs,lol.
