Aretha Burdened With Overdue Taxes

May 3, 2010

Aretha Franklin has new tax problems, less than two years after recovering from a $190,000 delinquent tax bill and narrowly avoiding foreclosure of her mansion overlooking the Detroit Golf Club.

The state of Michigan filed a lien against the "Queen of Soul" last month accusing her of owing more than $11,000 in delinquent income taxes. The address on the lien is Franklin's $1.8 million home in Bloomfield Hills. She also owes delinquent 2009 taxes of $33,729 on her Bloomfield Hills home, according Oakland County records. If unpaid, she would face foreclosure in 2012.

Franklin said she unintentionally neglected to pay the tax bill.

Does she have a history of financial problems like Prince or is this just an oversite on an accountants part?

An oversight on the accountant's part. basically the accountant decided to oversee RiRi not wanting to pay her tax bill. biggrin I swear all these celebs want to blame the accountant. You are earning the money and reporting it to your accountant. You are reviewing the tax docs and signing off on them. You are balancing your little check book and reviewing your banks statements. All these celebs can't be so dumb as to not make sure their taxes are in order espcecially when they hear about their colleagues going to jail for tax evasion.

She manages herself - so there is your answer. She changes accountants, lawyers and hangerson every other month - as well as cell phone numbers, poor thing sad
She is filthy rich, but has no guidance or does not listen to anyone.

Do you think that has to do with her being southern and black? I've heard a lot of older black folk from the south and particularly the music industry are distrustful of banking institutions, managers and accountants. Basically this fear of "the man" trying to steal one's money.

Oversight obviously. Aretha's never had big problems with taxes, she's only been reported twice about them before, once in 1980 and another just a few years ago.

That's not a bad track record. And cha know, Oprah is always talking about, no matter how many peeps you have working for you, you should still sign the checks so I give Aretha some credit for being on top of things, even if this means she has made an occassional mistake here and there. We all do.

Something went awry down in NOLA. She was in town, or she got spooked by the weather predictions.
She did Nashville on Sunday (Apr. 25th), then was to do NOLA, and then Birmingham on Sunday, May 2nd. She did 2 of the 3.
