So, uh, when are boybands coming back? I keep hearing all these rumblings of brand new small-time boybands everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE.
Kids' TV channels, the radio, newspapers, youtube, the Org.... Are we due for a resurgence soon? Music, like fashion, works in cycles so it's only a matter of time. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

If they do come back soon I wonder what it will mean for the Backstreet Boys, who, after 17 years are still around? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

We've got a right crap one here in the UK called JLS. They're massive with the teenage girls only because they're just about the only one around.

I heard of one from Toronto with 4 or 5 called WOW.
There are a few little bitty ones starting up here in the Lower Mainland, though I can't think of their names. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I just want to thank whatever God there may be that this time around Lou Pearlman's fat pedophile ass is in prison where he can't get his paws on any of these new boys. There were all kinds of really unpleasant stories going around about his behaviour with the boybands he was involved in. There was even talk of charges of molestation and sexual interference being laid and presented when he was on trial for fraud, but none of the boyband boys would speak with authorities. Tom Kaulitz I don't think Tokio Hotel counts as a boyband, do they? I guess it depends how you define the term though, doesn't it? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

by my calculations it was about every 8 to 10 years.
But with the over exposure due to internet it might push it back before it reemerges

Don't forget, guys, the role the Beatles played in all this. Sure, they weren't a boyband, at least not in the way most people think of boybands
BUT Beatlemania was a precursor to and set the tone for boyband fan behaviour that came after it. AND If the Beatles had never had "characters" or public personae to play i.e. George as The Quiet One, John as The Smart One, Ringo as The Funny One, and Paul as The Cute One, then modern boybands would never have had that model to form themselves around. Boyband members' public personae are one of the most vital ingredients in the form, and a big part of why it's so easy for a manager or agent to create an act. In other words, it's Paul McCartney's fault that Justin Timberlake ever had a career. Damn you, Paul! "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Well BSB just put out an album.
Nsync still owes an album to Jive records.

Of the "old" ones that are still around I am still rooting for Boyzone. I Gave It All Away is a great song and they still feel relevant to me.

Nsync still owes an album to Jive records. Correct on both points. *N SYNC still contractually owes an album to Jive so sooner or later they'll probably get back in the studio together. BSB put out an album last fall and are in the middle of a world tour to support it. They sold out, I believe, three nights at the O2, and all of their scheduled dates outside of the US are still major venues like stadiums. And they just celebrated their 17th year together as a group. Not too shabby considering acts like that usually only have a shelf life of 5 or 6 years max. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

when was this??? Vanity Fair had an article on it a year or two ago, and a few other news sources picked up the stories too. Pearlman had some kind of involvement with NKOTB, and was the manager for a time for BSB, *N SYNC, O-Town, and some other, smaller groups. He's currently serving jail time for fraud and embezzlement charges. There was all kinds of talk around the time he was arrested that he was engaging in some highly inappropriate sexual behaviour around and with his boys. The common understanding is that at least one boy in each group had to "pay" Pearlman for his services as manager to the group. There was all kinds of speculation about what went on and with who, but the authorities could never get any of the boys to talk so no charges were ever laid. They may all be youngish men in their late 20's and 30's now, but at the time these groups were involved with Pearlman most were in their teens. Many were quite young. Does anyone know what the process involves when a performer wants to duck out of a contract? Is there a fine, or how does it work? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
