Flashback - Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie

Man, I remember this tune back in the day. I was always intrigued that these kids played the instruments and did all the vocals. Talented tykes.

Here they are doing it live. Check out lil' man as he stops the band about one minute into the song, gets the crowd to become more involved, then starts over again! Good stuff!

So is Musical Youth's version. They didn't change any of the lyrics other than dutchie instead of kutchie.

They changed the background chant to, "how does it feel when you got no food" from "herb", I believe.

You are quite right, they did. Which makes sense.

Not that either change to the lyrics would have made that much difference - either you'd know what it was about or you'd have to be told. I was 15 when Musical Youth's version was released. If they'd sung "how does it feel when you got no herb" I'd probably have thought they were lamenting a lack of garnish.

lol I remember that song quite well. Man I am old sigh. I did not know back then what it was about until I read it in a magazine shortly after it was released and I did not know anything about smoking ganja back then lol. I remember I was shocked that these little kids sang a song about something like that. Now that I just came back from spending half a year in a rasta village in the the Caribbean I know that they were just singing about their every day life (even though it was a cover version) shrug.

WOW! I remember this joint. I couldn't have been no older than 10 at the time. I used to love this song. Had no idea what they were singing about until an older relative told me what it was about. It always was a catchy ong.
