Artists U learned 2 appreciate later in life I was just wondering what are some of the artists that u learned 2 appreciate later in life. For me, Stevie Wonder is the first that comes to mind. I always liked him, but didn't really appreciate his artistry until I was in college. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

When You're Daddy's Not Around Hell, I don't know when to start, I didn't appreciate ALL of the artists that worked pre-1980 untill later in life. This year in particular, I got deep into Santana and Sly Stone. Two artists I admired but didn't have intrest in,,,untill Samba Pa Ti & This Is Love came and stopped this dame DEAD on her tracks

OMG, I'm drawing it out purposely. It's so rich and filling it should be consumed slowly to savor every moment and enable proper digestion. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Diana Ross minus the Supremes Judy Garland Doris Day [i] Intersting that u mentioned them. I didn't appreciate the Supremes until I got the boxed set. When I got that and heard their sound evolve, I then learned to appreciate them. I don't consider myself a fanatic of them, but I still love them. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

All the jazz greats like Bird, Duke, Dizzy, Coltrane, Miles, Clifford Brown, Monk, Cannonball
but the guy I really admire now after studying him was Louis Armstrong (especially his early recordings). Powerful trumpet playing and the innovator of scatting. Ray Charles The Allman Brothers The Beatles (songwriting and production) Brian Wilson (Pet Sounds/experimental era) [Edited 4/24/10 0:39am]

No particular artist. Country music as a whole.
As a kid I mostly didn't associate the majority consumer with the art. But with country music it made me feel uncomfortable, uneasy. I rejected it outright, proudly proclaiming that I loved all music, except for that weedy nonsense. Then later in adulthood I found lots of it completely void of the red stripe I'd painted on the back of its neck, thick and ugly enough that it became like an impenetrable wall that blocked out almost all fair consideration. The sometimes perfect accompaniment to a gravel road, dirt floors, and peaceful prairies of mourning and celebration. Just like the blues, at the heart of it, there's no color, just more shades of the human experience.

Stevie Wonder-I have only started to "get" him and his 1970s work is untouchable
Elton John-Once again, his 1970s work is untouchable, Such introspective songs Bob Marley-It wasn't until I turned 18 that I really got into Bob Marley. When my mom was growing up in Jamaica, Bob marley was a staple of the musical experience and although I would "hear" his music, I never really "listened". "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

I"m finally able to digest most of Hendrix's catalog. In my younger days, stuff like Axis:Bold As Love was a little too esoteric.
I find I'm liking the live stuff a little more. His Marshalls sound so much better than the Fenders he used for recording.

I still haven´t bothered to take time to listen to him cause I could just never care less about his music. I am not feeling it. Maybe one day I will cause I used to feel the same way about Prince. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Al Green Billie Holiday, with the exception of Strange Fruit, don't think I ever listened to Billie before I was 18, now I wish I'd listened to her when I was going through those angsty teen years.

Even though I pride myself in being a Billie Holiday fanatic since 2002. It STILL takes a considerable amount of pain from me to listen to her latest stuff,,,esp Lady In Satin. That whole album(esp For All We Know) leaves me emotionally drained. I wish I didn't feel that way, because its really a masterpiece.

I've always admired and like them but I kinda started listening to Stax artist. Like a lot of people who thought we knew (we didn't know jack then or now probably) what went down when Diana Ross and The Supremes emerged -- I took a step back and never paid attention to them or Ross's solo career that much. Hell, there was too much good being made to give Ross or them a lot of thought. Then I came here when Timmy was going through his Diana Ross posting stage, and I went through my collection and pulled all their music out. With Diana, post Diana,.... those ladies and Ms. Ross made some damn good music.
