Well, after watching, that documentary on Soul Train, "The Hippest Trip In American", I would not doubt it. He did not seem so hip, after all. Well, after watching, that documentary on Soul Train, "The Hippest Trip In American", I would not doubt it. He did not seem so hip, after all. I don't know if you have seen it, but they talked about him not wanting any rappers on the show.  I've watched quite a few Soul Train clips starting in 1986 with rappers hitting the stage: LL Cool J, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Salt N Pepa.
Don always seemed quite rap-friendly in the interviews.  | |

Yep, kinda aloof, haughty,...wasn't a warmest person in the world. Kinda of ironic seeing the line of work he was in.
