Garry Shider, of Parliament/Funkadelic, Diagnosed with Brain & Lung Cancer

My Prayers go out to Garry & his family.

Dear friends, family, loyal fans and music industry constituents,

On March 25, Garry Shider of Parliament Funkadelic, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing stroke like symptoms at his home in Maryland.

Garry was hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where he was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer.

The legendary Garry "Star Child" Shider has been the premier vocalist, guitarist, writer and arranger for Parliament Funkadelic for forty years. He has toured the world countless times over, and has written such Funk classic hits as "Atomic Dog" and "One Nation Under a Groove". Throughout his incredible career, Garry has delivered his own brand of Funk and unique style, night after night, never disappointing his audiences and always leaving them wanting more.

We are reaching out world wide, asking Garry’s friends, family, loyal fans, and music industry constituents to make a donation to The Garry Shider Medical Fund in an effort to defray the medical expenses that are already starting to add up. Because Garry will be undergoing a series of radiation treatments and will need various medications and aftercare, he will not be able to tour.

Along with Garry’s dedicated wife of thirty-two years, Linda, and long time friend, Pete Shipman, Jr., we have established the Harmon, Health and Hope Foundation and are striving for a successful fundraising campaign to reach our goal of $500,000. We want everyone to know that no contribution is too small.

Please note that this is the official website for The Garry Shider Medical Fund. All credit card donations can be made safely and securely through PayPal. Donations can also be made by check. Please visit the Contact and Donation Information sections of our website for further information.

Though Garry has a long road ahead, we want Garry to know that he is not in this fight alone. We want him to know that he is loved throughout the world and that we are here to help. Garry, Linda, Garrett, and Marshall thank you for the love, support, heartfelt prayers and generosity.

Please visit our site for updates on Garry and to track our fundraising goals.

Picture I took of Garry just 5 months ago in his trademark diaper, when I saw them in November '09 up in The Bronx, NYC. They're saying now he won't be touring anymore sad

He's only 56.
The cancer cells very likely developed in the lungs and metastasized to his brain. I hope its not too late for him undergo chemotherapy & alternative treatments. He's a dynamic guitarist with a special gift for penning funky songs. I'm deeply saddened by this news.

That it seems to have already spread from one part of his body to another is not a good sign. I hope it's true what they said about The Funk: That it not only moves but can remove, dig? But just in case, I'm sure he's getting the best treatment possible.

Can't imagine going to a P-Funk show without Garry on stage sad . That's like The Rolling Stones without Keith Richards.

Yeah if it moved to one other part of his body, it's real bad news. I wonder how George is coping with his bandmates/former bandmates leaving this world so soon not to mention he lost both his mother AND son. sad

When I saw them in February, you could feel the love George and Garry had for each other. They were teasing each other and playing around, talking 'bout how F'd up they both were, lol. George was like: "Damn Garry, I've been knowing you for a hundred years!". With the losses George had already suffered by that point, I felt like he was really leaning on Garry for support.

One thing I've noticed about the P-Funk crew in recent years is that they have really been grooming the next generation of musicians, I assume to take over the Funk legacy... when the time comes. As it is, seems to me that RonKat Spearman will be able to seamlessly fall in line in the absence of Garry. Then of course Michael "Kid Funkadelic" Hampton is still with them, making the loss of Eddie Hazel a little more bearable. And I'm really feeling Kendra Foster and her whole outfit as well. So Funkadelic, as a brand, will live on. But I don't know WHAT I'll do if/when we lose George (...or Bootsy either, for that matter). As far as my Super-Funky Hero's, that would leave Prince standing alone - with a handful of honorable mentionee's (...and I'm not quite ready for that day). Hell, I still feel the sting from having lost Rick James and Roger Troutman! As it is, FUNK is hanging on by a thread!

In the meantime, Garry is still with us. And I'm sending him all the love I can, while I can!

This is bad news if the cancer has spread already, sad

I danced onstage with Garry, George and Sir Nose back in '05. The were really cool greeting fans after the show too.

I forgot my camera, as usual... disbelief

My heart and prayers go out to Garry, George and the whole Pfunk family. It's heartbreaking that our legends are leaving us at such an alarming rate and it's absolutely mind boggling that they are often unable to afford care when needed.

Pdogz is right about the next generation being carefully groomed. The Pfunk legacy will be in good hands.

I'll be making a small donation. It'll be a "drop in the bucket" compared to what his medical bills probably are by this point, but I'm sure Garry wouldn't want me to contribute more than I'm able.

I agree that it's mind-boggling that so many of our legends can't afford the care they need when they need it, but I suppose comprehensive Health Insurance isn't a part of the whole Funk-Star package when you sign up neutral . Just a couple of days in the hospital can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs, with just the flip of the switch of one of their magic life-saving machines.

I think that actors have some type of organization that provides assistance to the needy in their profession. I don't think there's anything like that for musicians though.

Garry has some rough times ahead...I'm sure every little bit will help.

I don't know how I'm going to feel, going to my next P-Funk gig and not seeing Garry on stage in his diaper. Funny how after all these years, seeing that man on stage in a diaper was hardly even unusual anymore, lol. You EXPECTED it, lol. Garry's name is in the credits of damn-nearly every song Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band, The Brides of Funkenstein, Parlet, and all the rest ever put out. It was CERTAINLY on all the hits.

I wish Garry could lay his chest and head on the radio, let the vibes flow through, so that FUNK could not only move, but REMOVE that cancer from his body, dig? neutral
