Funk never had a birthplace. hmmm

James Brown created most of his funk hits in the South. The Ohio-based groups like P-Funk, Ohio Players and etc. recorded in Detroit, other Ohio groups like Lakeside recorded in L.A. while Slave was New York/New Jersey.

shrug

I agree about James Brown.

Memphis had the Bar-Kays and Con Funk Shun.

Ohio wins for populated state for funk artists, but it's not the birthplace though. People escaped from Ohio to create funk in other states. cool

Born in NC, raised in New Jersey, recorded in Detroit for the duration of his career until the early 1980s.

Close...but I would argue Dayton/Cincinnati Ohio.

1st - King Records was located in Cincinatti that's where James recorded his early and Pre-Polydor shit, including "Cold Sweat" which people who think about such things (like me!) consider to be the first funk record ever recorded.

2nd - Bootsy and Catfish Collins are from Cincinatti. There is just no doubt that James' funk got stankier when these two cats made the scene. Think about "Sex Machine" with anyone other than Bootsy on bass.

3rd - Dayton, OH which is right up the street from Cincinatti, is the home of

1) The Ohio Players
2) Slave & Steve Arrington
3) Roger Troutman & Zapp
4) Sun (had a number of somewhat lesser hits in the late 70s early 80s)
5) Faze-O ("Riding High")

Can any other region of the country compare with this legacy?

california had sly and the family stone
the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music. sly may have not been the originator of soul but he was a true "funkologist" in his prime.

if you can obtain a copy of the track "i ain't got nobody," just take a listen.nod

Most Ohio groups were indeed from Dayton but I think Roger & Zapp were the only ones to stay put in Ohio (while also recording in Detroit). The other groups listed recorded outside the city.

The Isley Brothers were originally from Cincinnati but moved out in the early 1960s to Teaneck, New Jersey. That's where they came up with T-Neck.

And Sly and his family that formed the group (Freddie, Rose, etc.) were from Texas. Larry Graham was also from Texas.
