Yeah... The 'weird' looks/voice/music eclectism/the nastines... As a kid and teenager, I couldnt stand our Purple Majesty... But again, I'm 'only' 24 cool

Miles Davis
... And Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Ahmad Jamal... Well, like many kids, l wasnt giving a toe about jazz music... Now I need my daily shot cool

Common

... and Talib Kweli, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, The Roots. The average teenager I was just following the herd: I used to think Bad Boy/Death Row were making Genius music.. Until l paid attention to the lyrics and compared them to the 'conscious rappers'

Led Zeppelin
... I actually hate myself for not loving their music earlier

Duran Duran
... Depeche Mode, The Cure, Talking Head.. To me, most of the music especially New Wave) from the 80s music sounded dated, kitsch and too abstract lyrically.. Now thats the music I play like 80% of the time..

Growing up, my mother used to always play blues and soul artists. As a kid, of course I thought it was lame but as I grew older I couldn't and still can't get enough of artists like James Brown, The Isley Bros, Al Green, koko Tayler, Ray Charles, etc. I listen to Jimi Hendrix and Rick James as well. I also love and appreciate disco now too.

I still haven´t bothered to take time to listen to him cause I could just never care less about his music. I am not feeling it. Maybe one day I will cause I used to feel the same way about Prince.

Just curious, what albums (or songs) have you heard of him?

I mean, I know A LOT of Bowie haters (I'm not sayin' u are one of them wink) who can't help but respect and even like some of his albums...

I haven´t heard any of his albums, I just heard some of his hits back in the days when I used to have MTV. Can´t remember their names, but I could just never get into them.

I´ve seen one interview with him and he seemed like a really cool guy, though and looked real hot in it as well. lol

I'm sure you're gonna love hits like Fame, Let's Dance, Changes or Rebel Rebel, bona fide pop classics; give the man another chance!

U should try and check out the albums Station To Station, Low and Heroes. But if you are new to Mr Bowie i would recommend that u give Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs a try.

Oh yeah. I remember Let´s Dance. That one´s kinda cool. I´ll check the rest later on, guys. Thanks for the tips.

Billie Holiday, with the exception of Strange Fruit, don't think I ever listened to Billie before I was 18, now I wish I'd listened to her when I was going through those angsty teen years.

Even though I pride myself in being a Billie Holiday fanatic since 2002. It STILL takes a considerable amount of pain from me to listen to her latest stuff,,,esp Lady In Satin.

That whole album(esp For All We Know) leaves me emotionally drained. I wish I didn't feel that way, because its really a masterpiece.

I've only really started listening to Billie the last few years, but I know what you mean about Lady in Satin, I don't think there's any other album quite like it, so painfully beautiful, just hearing the opening of For All We Know gets me.

I was exactly the same. If it didn't have a catchy hook (and decent vocals) I wans't feeling it. Now I'm the complete opposite and can appreciate REAL hip-hop for what it is. I'll always have a soft spot for Bad Boy/Death Row because it drew me into rap, but I'm glad I've opened myself to other artists now.

There are so many artists I could list. I think for me, I got into a lot of older artists when I got sick and tired of all the crap that was being released in the 90's and 2000's. I really hate pop music these days and I truly appreciate the older artists from the 60's & 70's as well as some from even earlier. There are far too many to list, so I'll just say that I really appreciate the work of many, many artists who have been long forgotten or overlooked with the saturation of crap music such as hip/hop, pop, new country etc that we have these days.

i'm not answering the thread question exactly, but i want to give Bowie a shot. his mtv hits made me mildly curious. i like china girl (its kind of haunting), and modern love. not a fan of his voice per se, so i don't know what material is a good place to start.

i feel like i SHOULD give the Beatles a chance but i'm not sure i will. i think i'll just leave them and Radiohead in the overrated category without a critical listen

Miles Davis - its been said that most non jazz fans at least have Kind of Blue, i'm curious

Kind of Blue was the first jazz record I bought by Miles, I was never into jazz, so it was a pleasant surprise. I really like Miles from time to time...

Kind Of Blue (1959)
Birth Of The Cool (1957)
and if you like those 2... you should pick up a 80's one, like - Tutu (1986)

David Bowie... I started out with The Best Of (2cd) that was like 4 years ago, now... I have everything biggrin Maybe you should try;

1972 - Ziggy Stardust
if you like it then;
1973 - Aladdin Sane
1975 - Young Americans

His Berlin albums are good, but not for one who's just starting with Bowie, I believe.

LL Cool J.

I grew up in his neighborhood back in the 80's. Went to the same high school and saw him everywhere in Queens when he wasn't on tour. I couldn't stand his cocky ass and thought of him as a typical "nigga". But I have grown to have the most respect for him as a hip hop artist since he is still in the limelight and relevant. Most acts fade out after a couple of years, it's been 20 years and counting and he's still around. Hats off to you, you cocky motherfucker.
