50 Cent Speaks Out on Music Piracy

April 28, 2010

50 Cent has spoken out about his ongoing fight against illegal downloading.

The rapper was keen to state that music piracy is not killing the music industry, but is giving it new challenges and obstacles to overcome.

"I don't think the music business is dying. I think we're just experiencing technology and we just have to pass new laws, eventually, to change how music is being distributed,” he said.

50 Cent has suggested that the way the industry is run needs to be changed in order for the problems of piracy to be solved, reports MTV News.

"There's no lack of interest in great material, I don't see people 'not' going to the nightclub or enjoying themselves when the song comes on," he explained. "It's just about redeveloping what the music business is. It's easier to download a song that's three minutes long, probably about three or four seconds for you to download it, it's easier to steal.”

The rapper added that he believes things will start changing when piracy really begins to impact on the movie business. He declared that he could see things altering “when you got your blockbuster film doing $120 million in a weekend and then that blockbuster film that they spent $120 million comes out and nobody goes to see but everybody watched it because they could pull it off their computer and see it on HD at home on a theatre. They'll change those laws".

It makes me laugh, the way that you can have someone like 'Fiddy', whose entire image is based on being a bad boy, on the wrong side of the law, 'me against the system' type of thing, but when it gets to the issue of file-sharing, he falls right into line like a perfect little industry pooch. Just shows you what a vacuous load of sh*t his whole depressing career is based on.

Since the mainstream is filled with nothing but so-called artists like him, I'm all for music piracy because it seems that the only way to eliminate the trash is to run them and their labels broke.

If shit hop ever dies, then I'll be against music piracy but until that day, keep on downloading people and don't just download, but make copies of the CDs for anyone that likes it such as nephews, neices, and their friends also. Every little bit helps in running the bastards broke. evillol

he doesn't seem smart to me, he doesn't realize that going to a movie or a club to hear songs is an event, people will always bring their dates, family and friends out to the movies and to night clubs, piracy will never effect that. nobody is going to sit at home and download movies and mp3s with a date, although that would be my ideal date lol

Complaining about music piracy is sooooo 2001,lol.Fiddy is late to this party.Funny,I didn't hear him bitching about file-sharing in 2003,when he was actually selling alot of CDs.Now that his CDs aren't selling anymore,he suddenly decides to take a stand against piracy?! How convenient lol

Actually, contrary to popular belief - he is, somewhat. Curtis is a very calculating person. Most importantly, he is a good manipulator. He makes use of his resources. He doesn't know jack shit about music and neither do the people around him, so in every conversation/interview about music - he defers it to money, units sold, etc. He listens to smart people and what they have to say, then he repeats it, which makes him SEEM smarter than he is. Everyone under him is far too dumb to take his place or threaten his position and everyone over him (Jimmy Iovine, etc.) use his image to make them money, which he goes along with because he likes money. He's certainly not an artist or an entertainer. His only marketable skill is selling his personality, which is what he does.
So, he's not a dummy by any stretch. He's also not a genius or mastermind of any kind. He just has a talent for manipulation. That takes a small degree of smarts.

I agree. He is a sensible business man.

50 is now moving away from Hip-Hop on his next album 'Black Magic' BTW. Another good business move but how much love it shows toward the form I don't know.

Regardless, the guy is way more intelligent than most give him credit for. That image is merely a construct. An artifice.
