A Classical Thread.... ...
Anyone have any favorite Classical pieces? My favorites all seem to be from the Impressionist/ Modern periods... Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse, whose name was also spelled Edgar Varèse[1] (December 22, 1883 – November 6, 1965), was an innovative French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. Varèse's music features an emphasis on timbre and rhythm. He was the inventor of the term "organized sound", a phrase meaning that certain timbres and rhythms can be grouped together, sublimating into a whole new definition of music. Although his complete surviving works only last about three hours, he has been recognised as an influence by several major composers of the late 20th century. His use of new instruments and electronic resources led to his being known as the "Father of Electronic Music" while Henry Miller described him as "The stratospheric Colossus of Sound". They say that Prokofiev is one of the most popular composer in 20th Century Classical Music, but I gotta admit that, outside of Peter and The Wolf, and the ballet Romeo and Juliet, I hadn't heard most of his work...actually, I'm reading his Wiki entry now, and they noted that he's probably not as celebrated in the U.S. because of the Cold War ... ... I very much enjoy the Italian bel canto masters; Rossini, Bellini & Donizetti.
From Rossini's La Cenerentola, I enjoy operas by other Italian composers as well, mainly Verdi and Puccini. Mozart's operas are also to my liking, and the parts I've heard of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen were fantastic. From Mozart's Così Fan Tutte On the Org since 2005.
