So...how does an up and coming artist get radio play?

I was talking to my mom about independent artist (indie) music, because she was complaining that their isn't any good music out anymore. I told her that their is good music out but a lot of these artist aren't getting radio play. She asked me how does an artist get radio play. I didnt have an answer for her. Can anyone answer this for me?

Some are going the other route and making "online singles"

Um communication companies such as ClearChannel have people that select the artist/songs based off popularity then they add these songs to a playlist and submit these playlists to radio stations they own. That's why most of these stations play the same crap over and over. YAY!
