Rock music in the 90s is not something to shout about

80s/70s > 90s

confuse ?

but of course!; anyway, I'm not a rock fan to begin with; for me, "rock" died after 1990... lol

I dunno if these are unpopular or not, but they are my opinions on random musical subjects:

Genesis was better with Phil Collins as lead singer.

But Peter Gabriel's solo output tops Genesis + Phil Collins solo for sheer consistent brilliance.

David Bowie is one of the Top 3 or 4 most influential artists in rock history. He almost single-handedly ushered in the new wave/post-punk craze of the late 70s/early 80s

I love the Human League, but those 2 gals cannot sing on key if their lives depended on it. But that's part of their charm.

Eurythmics deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame, but they may never get there.

Pet Shop Boys are the smartest pop songwriters and best pop producers of the last 25 years.

Mariah Carey has one classic single: Vision of Love. Just about everything else she's done is disposable pap.

Janet Jackson, with her papery-thin voice, would have been politely ushered out of any record executive's office with a firm NO THANKS had it not been for her famous family. And w/out Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis, she'd be the younger equivalent of Rebbie and LaToya. But I still like her, and the Nipplegate hysteria was the most idiotic overreaction in pop culture history.

I love The Cure, but honestly.... with the hair and the makeup STILL, at 51 years old, Robert Smith has become something of a mockery of himself. And musically he's run out of things to say and new, interesting ideas. He seems content to perpetually recycle himself.

Madonna is the top female artist of all time, period. She's maintained an extraordinary level of popularity and relevance over a nearly 30 year period, and has released an incredible string of classic singles and albums that helps define pop music.

Iron Maiden is an amazing band that deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Same with Rush.

Seal is a maddeningly inconsistent artist.

Beyonce is far more talented than her critics want to admit.

Falco is seen as a novelty act one-hit wonder in the US. It's unfortunate, cuz he put out lots of great stuff.

Radiohead and U2 are the most important rock bands of the last 30 years, and will take their places alongside bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, etc. as titans in rock history.

I like Depeche Mode, but they are capable of incredibly cringe-inducingly bad lyrics at times.

Taylor Dayne should have been more successful, for a longer period. A killer voice.

Sting is without question the most pretentious artist in rock/pop, and he hasn't released anything worth listening to since "Mercury Falling" - - which is his most undervalued album by far.

The Doors and Led Zeppelin I are 2 of the greatest debut albums in rock history; perhaps the greatest.

Neil Young and Bob Dylan both had some undervalued gems in the 80s, but by and large their output that decade is far below their normal standard. Still, they both managed a handful of stone-cold classics during that period (especially Dylan).

Cyndi Lauper fucking rocks.

Erasure doesn't get the respect they deserve. They've been putting out killer singles and albums for 25 years, and they are phenomenally good in concert.

Rod Stewart has become an embarrassment with the Great American Songbook series. Eeep.

Tom Waits is one of the best songwriters in rock history, and "Hold On" from Mule Variations may be his peak. Or "Time"...

"Abnormally Attracted to Sin" by Tori Amos was her strongest album in years, and was sadly overlooked.

I appreciate Morrissey and The Smiths, but I can only listen to them in small doses.

Alanis Morrisette is still releasing great albums, and it's a shame the public has by and large lost interest.

Michael Jackson's best single is "Billie Jean" - - period. End of argument.

Prince fans are the most masochistic in all of pop/rock music.

Ozzy Osbourne has become a sad caricature of himself.

Nine Inch Nails - - - - overrated. I like some of their stuff, but jeez talk about taking yourself too fucking seriously. Trent needs to get laid.

Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are 3 very very different bands who somehow got lumped together because they were from the same city. All 3 were great.

It's pointless for Fleetwood Mac to tour and record without Christine McVie.

The Fixx's "Phantoms" may be THE most underrated and overlooked rock album of the 80's.

Arcade Fire, Editors and Bloc Party are the best bands to emerge in the last decade.

Kate Bush is a goddess and I would pay any amount of money to see her perform live.

Semisonic is a killer band that sadly got pegged into the 90's rock scene and wasn't able to overcome the albatross of "one-hit-wonder" status after "Closing Time". Dan Wilson is an outstanding songwriter.

Eminem is finished.

Springsteen is as good as he's ever been.

George Michael is about as good as it gets as a pop vocalist. Too bad he hasn't released a consistently good album since Listen Without Prejudice.

Every Foo Fighters song sounds alike to me.

Green Day is THE most overrated band of the last decade. And please don't call them punk. They are not punk in any way, shape or form. They are power-pop.

New Order is way way way overrated (although i love some of their stuff, in particular Technique.) They came nowhere close to ever matching Joy Division.

Guns n' Roses - fuck yeah. Chinese Democracy - Fuck No.

CCR - - brilliant band. Effigy is the shit.

k.d. lang is an extraordinary vocalist who doesn't get nearly the respect she deserves.

I want to have sex with Kings of Leon.

Gwen Stefani - i like her, but everytime I've heard her sing live on TV its sucked, and she's pretty hideous without lots and lots of makeup.

OK that's all I can think of now cool Which is probably a good thing.
[Edited 4/21/10 17:52pm]

Billy Joel's song, "River Of Dreams" was a masterpiece, equal, if not better than any of of his earlier pop songs.

INXS (with Michael Hutchence) had U2 beat in every way.

Prince's best album was the "Batman" soundtrack.

George Michael belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Making fun of Michael Jackson or calling him names like Jacko isn't fair, justified, and the people that do should be punched.

Michael Jackson never molested any damned kids.

R. Kelly belongs in jail.

Lenny Kravitz will be a legend in 20 years.

Janet Jackson Gets Hotter with Age

Seal is one of the most talented vocalists of all time.

Jay-Z isn't a very good rapper.

Eminem is over-rated and just silly.

Rihanna is more talented and sexier than Beyonce could ever be.
(And totally a better live performer.)

Will.I.Am's solo music is borring.

Michael Jackson's cover of "Come Together" was better than the original.

The Beatles are just a tad over-rated and over-played everywhere.

Marky Mark and Will Smith were decent rappers.

If Madonna (with her unmelodic voice and zero dancing skills despite studying dance), Kylie, Paula Abdul, Jennifer Lopez, Rhianna – have managed to get records deals without Jam/ Lewis and having a famous last name. Then there is no reason why Janet (who arguably has a better voice then these artists) couldn’t have made it without being a Jackson or working with these producers.
Granted – they’re your opinions. But it’s tired, old and an opinion unfortunately held by many people, so it shouldn’t be on this list in the first place.

Actually you're not. I've heard many MJ fans say this. I completely disagree though. I think Dangerous was great, it's a very underrated album. But I feel that History was his worse album ever. I always hated History and Invincible. After he died, I tried to give both albums another chance. I now see that Invincible isn't as bad as I made it out to be when it came out in 2001, but I still think that History is total garbage. It's just overproduced, overdone garbage.

History was garbage? Little Susie? Stranger in Moscow? Earth song? They don’t care about us? Scream? D.S?

Its all personal preference however if you listen carefully you would know that it was MJ at his peak as a songwriter on the album and the prime example is “stranger in Moscow” which musically butchers any track MJ ever recorded on his entire albums ,the songs MJ offered and wrote by himself on that record are melodic and timeless …..

Little Susie is another great underrated track, many fans may do not like it but I think its one of his best ……you don’t like the album which is your opinion but I think its far far from garbage.
