One Chanting eek going OM on us from the get go biggrin Oh wow, I checked back to 8 tracks when I thought the song ended and it was only halfway through and then those drums came in lol I do not read the write ups before listening so am interested in what this song is actually about. I love the indian sound in pop music, much the way Prince has used as a common theme throughout his career. Interesting how much influence this sound of music has had on popular music culture, especially in the past.

Two Production sounds totally 80s to me. Did I get the era right? lol For some reason I picture big 80s hair and people running around with guns in a pseudo comedy that on first watch in the 80s was all serious and shit then you watch it now and are embarrassed that you ever took it seriously lol

This sounds like a mix between a Brazillian Street fair and some space age carnival.

Three I picture a scene from Twilight Zone on this one.

FourThis had me hooked in INSTANTLY. Damn, I thought this was going to take a completely different direction than it did. I LOVE THIS.

Five Wow. This feels like one song layered ontop of another but it works. Short but sweet smile

Six Vatican City, under the Popes bed, Demons and Angels. The more you listen to this it begins to sound like Wind eek The human voice is amazing.

SevenI wish I was at the original bar where this first played. Imagining the food, the drinks, the way people are dressed, the hair, the atmosphere, the conversation and people. This put me in a totally different place. I feel like I was just in Europe lol Oh yeah, love organs music touched

EightRemember that album I told you about with the Astronaught and the maiden with the dragon and all that? Well I found that tape and when we connect I'll play it for you to see if you recognize who it is. This sort of reminds me of that talbum. The thing I love about this is the thought of everyone coming together on some odd ass timing and making music mushy

Nine I exclaim DIG exclaim THE exclaim HELL exclaim OUT exclaim OF exclaim THIS exclaim I would imagine that musicians get different things out of music and I don't play music but this sounds, to me, that it would be a highly satisfying experience for a musician to contribute to. This is my favorite track clapping Damn, this song just flat out kicks ASS headbang

Ten WHAT? eyepop No you didn't go all Towa Tei "Angel" / Bjork "Pluto" on our asses! faint lol OK, as much as I love NINE I'm going to have to rope this in as tied for favorite. I WON'T choose between the last 2 tracks exclaim hmph! exclaim This song is incredible lol biggrin

Ok, first your pictures! Laserbeams, X-Rays and Braintapping eek Second, look at you all Madhouse and shit with your One, Two, Three track titles lol biggrin
Third, Instrumental! omfg We haven't had one of those yet. Leave it to TA to break new ground clapping worship I dig this mix so much. The thing I've always loved about instrumentals is how it can be anything to anyone. I mean who else is going to invoke Angels and Demons underneath the Pope's bed? lol

Excellent mix! biggrin when does it arrive in my mailbox? lurking

One - I love Indian music! I always have a hard time finding what my ear is looking for. So far I want to do Yoga. Ooo... is that a tabla? biggrin

Two - This sounds like something I would do warm-ups to in my former dance classes. Repetitive, not too complicated, steady beat. "5, 6, 7, 8..."

Three - NICE! I'm loving this intro. Reminds me of Vincent Price, but not... entering a carnival of days passed... I like the bird-like"whoop" sound that continues. Sharper notes... curiosity... "we're not in Kansas anymore."

Four - This has me picturing a scene that may have been deleted from Labyrinth. Another masquerade ball perhaps. Also sounds like something that could've been on the npg orchestra kamasutra album. Love this!

Five - Waves crashing...the time would be around evening or night. Violent waves by the fierce crashing of the symbols. I think I felt a strong wind blow my way.

Six - I missed the intro on this one. Had to up the volume. Wow... amazing! I feel like I'm in an Edvard Munch painting... there's a point where I'm in "The Scream." Walking through "Anxiety" and ending in "Despair."

Seven - Bluesy... Definitely a bar setting. Smoke-filled room. People drinking & dressed to the 9's. The organs are astounding. Wow! What an ending!

Eight - For some reason this makes me think of a busy day in New York, although I've never been there. Beginning in the morning, people are walking in fast forward, images & popular sights are flickering at a quickened pace and it all ends at night. Did I see this on Reading Rainbow? lol

Nine - This makes me think of some cat dressed up strutting his stuff down the streets while everyone stops what they're doing, turns their head and asks, "WHO is THAT?" Man, this is just TOO funky! I love that there are so many layers to this. Yes, this cat does have his pick of the ladies. Smooth... so smooth. Then, he returns home and you discover he's just a regular Tom.

Ten - I can see some shimmy shaking. Girls in 60's style dresses with fringe & go-go boots. Why am I thinking of Austin Powers & Barbarella now? I'm hearing some laser guns zapping some aliens about now. This one was fun!

Love your art work & quotes. This was an interesting journey for sure without knowing beforehand what I was about to hear. Very cool mix & project. wink

First I would like to thank everyone that participated.
Now on with the details of what you were listening to.

Track 1:
Trilok Gurtu - Om...

...Usfret (1988)

Shobha Gurtu - vocals
Trilok Gurtu - percussion
Daniel Goyone - keyboards
Walter Quintus - tambura

A world class, virtuoso percussionist, now in his mid fifties, Trilok has attracted a world class set of collaborators over a long career; these started with John McLaughlin in whose trio, Trilok flourished as the featured soloist for 4 years, other jazz greats continued this path – Joe Zawinul, Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Evans, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Holland were all attracted to Trilok’s burning sense of rhythm. Of course he is deeply rooted in the Indian tradition, so it is no surprise to see that collaborations also took place with the glitterati of Indian musical society – his mother, Shobha Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, L. Shankar, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariprasad Chaurasia, The Misra Brothers and Sultan Khan.

OM or AUM is the symbol of essence of Hinduism. It means oneness with the Supreme, the merging of the physical being with the spiritual. The most sacred syllable, the first sound of the Almighty - the sound from which emerges each and every other sound, whether of music or of language.

http://www.webonautics.co...ymbol.html

This tune seemed like a good place to start with its meditative intro serving as a tool to clear the mind for what's to come.
The star is really the amazing voice of Shobha Gurtu. She's been hailed as the Queen of Thumri (a specific Hindu vocal style incorporating very emotional improvisation).

Track 2:
Steps Ahead - Safari...

...Modern Times (1984)

Mike Mainieri - vibes, marimba
Michael Brecker - sax
Warren Bernhardt - keyboards
Eddie Gomez - bass
Peter Erskine - drums, percussion

Originally called Steps when it was formed in 1979 by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, this group at various times has included tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker; keyboardists Don Grolnick, Eliane Elias, and Rachel Z; guitarist Mike Stern; bassists Eddie Gomez and Darryl Jones; and drummers Peter Erskine and Steve Smith, among others. Its music combines advanced jazz, R&B, rock, and fusion and is frequently exciting. Steps Ahead was most active during 1979-1986, although it still existed on a part-time basis in the mid-'90s.

A nice sensual tropical-feel a nice sendoff for you musical Safari.

Track 3:
Dick Hyman - Evening Thoughts...

...MOOG: The Electric Eclectics of DICK HYMAN (1969)

Dick Hyman - organ, moog synthesizer

Throughout a busy musical career that got underway in the early '50s, Dick Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, music director, and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in film scores, orchestral compositions, concert appearances and well over 100 albums recorded under his own name. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Mr. Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and has researched and recorded the piano music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Zez Confrey, Eubie Blake and Fats Waller, which he often features in his frequent recitals. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington. Some of his recordings with combos are From The Age Of Swing, Swing Is Here, Cheek To Cheek, and If Bix Played Gershwin, plus numerous duet albums with Ruby Braff, Ralph Sutton, Shelly Berg, Ken Peplowski and others. In a different vein, Mr. Hyman was one of the first to record on the Moog synthesizer, and his “Minotaur” landed on the Billboard charts.

This cut has been a favorite for years.
However it always gave me the mental image of Morning Thoughts for some reason.

This might represent a (day/night) dream you had during the course of your safari on your way to this unknown location.

Track 4:
Jeff Beck - Never Alone...

...Emotion & Commotion (2010)

Jeff Beck - guitar
Jason Rebello - keyboards
Vinnie Colaiuta - drums
Tal Wilkenfeld - bass

Beck grew up in Wallington, England. His mother’s piano playing and the family’s radio tuned to everything from dance to classical made sure Beck was surrounded by music from a young age.

“For my parents, who lived through the war, music was a source of comfort to them. Life was tense and music helped them forget about their troubles. I’m sure that made an impression on me,” recalls Beck. “I was really small when jazz broke through in England and I can still remember sneaking off to the living room to listen to it on the radio—much to my parent’s disapproval.”

This spot in the set always belonged to JB with Two Rivers (Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop - 1989) being my initial selection.
That is until I heard his latest album and decided to go with the more current piece with a similar vibe.

This beautiful melody might give you a calm feeling, but don't get too comfortable.

Track 5:
Allan Holdsworth - Material Unreal...

...The Sixteen Men Of Tain (2000)

Allan Holdsworth - synthaxe
Gary Novak - drums
Dave Carpenter - bass

Allan Holdsworth is widely regarded by fans and contemporary musicians as one of the 20th century's most prominent guitarists. He is one of a handful of musicians who has consistently proven himself as an innovator in between and within the worlds of rock and jazz music. Many of music's best-known instrumental masters cite Holdsworth as that rare and shining voice—a legendary player who continues to push the outer limits of instrumental technique and the electric guitar's range of tonal and textural possibilities.

A theme from taken from an earlier Allan Holdsworth song called Material Real on his 1983 Road Games album.
The dichotomy of a peaceful seven note circular melody set against the frentic drumming seemed like a good setup for the next track.

It feels as if you've fallen into and are floating endlessly downward through an aural abyss.

Track 6:
György Ligeti - Lux Aeterna...

...György Ligeti Edition 2: A Cappella Choral Works - London Sinfonietta Voices (1997)

György Ligeti was one of the most important avant-garde composers in the latter half of the twentieth century. He stood with Boulez, Berio, Stockhausen, and Cage as one of the most innovative and influential among progressive figures of his time. His early works show the influence of Bartók and Kodály, and like them, he studied folk music and made transcriptions from folk material. In Apparitions (1958-1959) and Atmosphères (1961), he developed a style forged from chromatic cluster chords that are devoid of conventional melody, pitch and rhythm, but instead grow into timbres and textures that yield new sonic possibilities. The composer referred to this method as "micropolyphony." In Aventures (1962), Ligeti devised a vocal technique in which the singers are required to make a full range of vocalizations, cries and nonsense noises to fashion a kind of imaginary, non-specific drama, but with rather specifically expressed emotions. Ligeti was almost alone among progressive composers from the latter twentieth century who have written popular and widely performed music.

The Latin term lux aeterna, which means "eternal light"

Lux Aeterna is a choral work by the Hungarian composer György Ligeti, composed in 1966. It was one of his compositions used in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) during the scenes depicting the travel from the Clavius moonbase to the TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly One) excavation.

It was while watching 2001, during this specific scene, that the idea for the experiment came to mind.

The prior fall lands you gently into this whirlpool of voices.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Track 7:
Joey DeFrancesco - Bayou...

...The Champ: Round 2 (2000)

Joey DeFrancesco - organ
Paul Bollenback - guitar
Byron Landham - drums

Today DeFrancesco is regarded by organ aficionados as the baddest B-3 burner in the business (a claim supported by his five consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll awards for 2002, 2003, 2004, 3005and 2006). And while Joey has never made any boastful claims about his own ranking among the organ elite on the contrary, he has always respectfully deferred to his B-3 elders, the fact is, no organist today plays with the skill, harmonic depth, and authority of this phenomenon from Philly. With over 20 solo releases and historic associations with legends such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones and John McLaughlin, DeFrancesco's place in the idiom’s history is cemented.

This is Joey D's version of a tune from one his idols, B-3 great Jimmy Smith.

I'm a big B-3 freak and Joey D is one of my favorites.
This track's purpose was to bring things back to earth a bit.
Release the tension prior to the next excursion.

Track 8:
Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up: Opening...

...The Way Up (2005)

Pat Metheny - guitar
Lyle Mays - keyboards
Steve Rodby - bass
Antonio Sanchez - drums
Cuong Vu - trumpet
Gregoire Maret - harmonica

Metheny's versatility is almost nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. He has been part of a writing team with keyboardist Lyle Mays for more than twenty years - an association that has been compared to the Lennon/McCartney and Ellington/Strayhorn partnerships by critics and listeners alike. Metheny's body of work includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces, with settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical.

This tune was selected for the great melodic/harmonic/rhythmic movement in the arrangement.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Track 9:
Alan Pasqua - New Rhodes...

...Anti Social Club (2007)

Alan Pasqua - keyboards
Jimmy Haslip - bass
Scott Amendola - drums
Nels Cline - guitar
Alex Acuña - percussion
Ambrose Akinmusire - trumpet
Jeff Ellwood - sax

Alan Pasqua, Chair of Jazz Studies at USC, was born in New Jersey and began studying piano at the age of seven, playing both classical and jazz. He attended Indiana University and received his bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory. His teachers at the time were Jaki Byard, Thad Jones, George Russell, David Baker and Gunther Schuller.

While performing a concert at Carnegie Hall, Pasqua met the legendary drummer Tony Williams. Pasqua was asked to join The New Tony Williams Lifetime along with guitarist Allan Holdsworth.

A looser jam feel to offset the last track's tight structured arrangement.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Track 10:
Jojo Mayer & Nerve - Retox...

...Prohibited Beats (2009)

Jojo Mayer - drums
Takuya Nakamura - keyboards, trumpet
John Davis - bass
Roli Mosimann - real time audio deconstruction

NERVE was initiated in the spring of '98 by drum wizard Jojo Mayer as an experimental platform for a handful of New York musicians interested in the cultural phenomenon of intelligent electronic DJ culture and the opportunity it created as a gateway to new musical paradigms and pioneered the movement of live “electronic” music.

His basic idea was to deconstruct electronic music and reverse engineer the textures and rhythms of digital production within a live performed context. Live drums, bass, keyboards and live interactive sound processing - no loops, sequencers, or pre- production. All sounds and rhythms performed in real time!

http://www.myspace.com/jojomayernerve

A drummer friend, who I have a great deal of respect for, suggested that I check this group out. At the time, I had no clue what they were about or what type of music they played. Their performance was nothing less than astonishing. It wasn't unil I did some research on them afterwards and realized what the music was based on that the live performance became even more amazing.

Wanting to end the set with an uptempo kick-ass bang, this band fit the bill. I swiched between
3 tracks on this album before settling on Retox which seemed to work best.

There you have it.
Hope you enjoyed the ride.
