The Isley Brothers also wrote so many great songs over the years.

In terms of modern songwriters, these 2 guys would certainly make my list...

Of course them. The common theme in all these posts seems to be the strength in songwriting from about the 1960s through the mid 1980s. Not sure if this indirectly ties into the rise of MTV as well, but consistently great songwriting over an extended period seems rare now "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

I'll take Stevie as my #1 but I also like
Ashford & Simpson Lionel Richie (some may disagree, but I think so) Norman Whitfield (Barrett Strong also) Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis Curtis Mayfield Babyface (some may disagree)

I like all those listed above.
I also think as far as young folk, I would put Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Chrissette Michelle, Alicia Keys, Timbaland, Static Major (RIP) on a list too. I would also put quite a few hip hop artists on there like Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli (it's hard sometimes to know who has a ghostwriter LOL) Common
