are today's musician's/singers getting a bum rap for being untalented? there really some good musicians out there today who can probably be really good, but are almost stifled by labels/consumers who want them to be cookie cutter. i stumbled across this video by accident. the guy, ryan leslie, has a bunch of generic hip hops tracks out there, but he does a pretty good impromptu arrangement over lil wayne's lollipop.

There's actually a lot of really excellent, talented new acts coming up right now in pretty much every genre imaginable. The problem is, due to the nature of the industry a lot of these performers are forced to stay independent or self-manage and don't get the promotion or attention they deserve.
What's being pushed right now in the mainstream industry is style over substance, and with that each "new" act is just a thinly disguised copy of their peers. I urge everyone here who complains about modern mainstream music -and believe me, the list of legitimate complaints is long -to check out shows in their area by local bands, listen to independent radio stations if you can, do the Myspace thing, check out smaller production music magazines. There's a lot of good to be had out there in the new music world, but you just can't rely on standard radio or MTV to hear it. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!" | |
