Larry Graham & Graham Central Station, Koko Camden, 25/4/10

Hi,

Anyone else here going to this? I'm not a big fan of Mr.G in the time he was with P but am going on the hope that some classic Sly Stone tracks will be played. Anyone else?

TT.
All of my hang-ups have gone. How I wish you felt the same.

Whateva! Who cares if he plays Sly songs? That's obvious. I'd rather he play a lot of his original GCS music which was fantastic!

That would be cool, but you know he's going to play: Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), Everyday People, I Want To Take You Higher, Dance To The Music, Sing A Simple Song..

The good lady wife and I will be there. Got the tickets tonight.

Looking forward to a real funk-fest. The venue holds 1,400 total, but that includes directors boxes, balconies etc. I think the main theatre part is about 300 persons?

I've never been to Koko. I know Prince has played it.

I think he will sing a great deal of 'GCS' songs as he's playing with a reformed GCS. How many of the original members it includes I don't know.

Have you listened to the 'Release Yourself' and 'Aint-no-bout-a-doubt-it' reissue CD's? These are funk classics. Dynamite.

Also, there is the relatively recent Larry Graham & Graham Central Station Anthology, which is all remastered with extensive liner notes. The first disc in particular, I think, will be of interest to you.

You may have heard some of this material live with Prince, but listening in its original context I think, is quite different.

Anyway, it's worth going just to hear Larry's bass soloing. Incredible.

Don't get me wrong, i'm a fan of the Graham Central sound too. And yes, I do have the 2 disc anthology. It would be great to hear tracks like Hair and Release Yourself live but equally it would be great to hear some Sly tracks. Not like the man himself is ever going to go out on the road, is it??

Well, Sly Stone has been 'guesting' with a 'Family Stone' band, but unfortunately, he has been typically appearing for just three songs and then only mumbling and fiddling with the keys.

I have heard it is better to see Sly if he guests with George Clinton, though I don't think this is a regular arrangement and I heard it through a second-party. I only hope Sly releases something from the studio in due course.

So yes, I'd say that Larry is the last one left in any fit state. I'm sure he will play Family Stone stuff. I'd be very suprised if he didn't.

In 2008 Sly performed in Tokyo,Japan with Rose Stone, her daughter, and Cynthia and Jerry on horns and they sounded great on the songs "Family Affair", "If You Want Me to Stay" and "Sing A Simple Song". You can see it on YOUTUBE.When orriginal members are playing with him the better he sounds!Larry Graham and Sly Stone need to "make-up" and make another great catalog of music and show the s*** hoppers how it's DONE!!!!!

In fairness, Larry is not exactly a 'pop' superstar is he? What media interest would we expect?

Funk-fans will be interested (when does funk have 'national interest?). As will bass-playing afficionados as Larry is always highly mentioned in such publications.

Jesus, most kids don't even know who Sly & the Family Stone or Parliament-Funkadelic is.

When George Clinton played the UK last there was no attention either. Nor for Maceo Parker.

Shame, but that's the way it is.

Yes, because then Larry could 'carry' Sly and Sly could make his little 'appearances'.

I would like a proper touring 'funk-fest':GCS,George Clinton & P-Funk,Maceo Parker etc.

I just checked my schedule, and it appears I'm busy that day. What are the odds? Sheesh. Ah well, got to see if I can work something out.

Yeah, I grant you that. He's no pop star compared to people like Juanes or Pink.

But you know what, when George Clinton was coming to Helsinki recently, they actually had flyers circulating weeks before the gig. They were available pretty much at every ticket office. And when Sly played in Pori Jazz Festival couple years back, he was one of the main acts. The gig was sold out, I heard. Even the Algerian rai singer Rachid Taha got more publicity than Larry, plus an interview before the concert. That's why I'm amazed that I only found out about this gig just yesterday.

It seems they have a busy schedule, just one day apart between Finland and UK for instance. I can't find any other dates, officially they don't even seem to have a website.

Story of my life too, most likely I'll be at work on 23rd. Tickets are selling for only about 40 euros, to me that's quite reasonable.

Do you think it's due to ticket sales or the volcano (i.e concerns about returning home)? Because if it's the volcano the London date is buggered.

He has kept all his other dates though.

It must be because of the volcano. When I booked my ticket the seat options were quite limited, so it has to be that.

They actually took down a few flights from places like Tokyo to Finland earlier on Thursday but not to Helsinki. Now the traffic is all down again.

The London date is in a couple of days so it might just go ahead, depending on what they will decide in terms of air traffic regulations. I assume some authority will keep those people posted who have bought a ticket for any possible refunds. It's all worked out ok here in Finland.
