I always look forward to her music and though I was whining all throughout 20 YO, I have to be in the mood for that album, cause sometimes I'm feeling it and other times I'm not. Last night I was into it. My top 5 on there are call on me, daybreak, enjoy, take care and so excited

Damn. No With U?

Oh I love that song too, was going to include that but went with so excited, I love the melody of with you and the buildup at the end, but I think the music could have been worked on a little more, though I like her voice on it a lot

I'm aware of that. The era wasn't really bad compared to the Discipline era.

No way. NOTHING is shittier than the 20 YO era.

This picture pretty much sums up what that whole era was about. neutral

Well, yea but the Discipline era was just all over the place and easily her worst era.

In the 20 Y.O. era she was everywhere, on every magazine cover. Yea, people talked shit and wanted her to go away. Janet seemed unbothered and happy. The music wasn’t all that good but she got a radio hit with “Call on Me”.

Now in the Discipline era - she wasn’t being promoted properly, the cancellation of the shows, the album, the poodle wig etc. on top of that she was getting sooooo much shit from the media eek It was madness. I also think she was going through some things in her personal life. She seemed so nervous and somewhat unstable.

Ugh. shake

Worst Janet era ever. I’m sure Janet would agree as well.

If u have an extra $1 or so laying around, it's worth it for the documentary.

Frankly, I really wish she would stop recording for awhile.

It used to aggravate me when she'd take 4 years between albums. Then with DJ, 20YO & Discipline, she started putting them out every 2-3 years. And it became apparent that she really did need that whole 4 years to come up with a good album.

Agreed.

Discipline era was like a train wreck lol I hated that she avoided things by playing sick. Kind of pathetic. Now she's acting like it never happened. neutral Its also sad how news of her departing IDJ was bigger news than her album and tour. The media really doesn't hold back when it comes to Janet and her letdowns. disbelief Fuck them.

mmmm, not really. I was there. she never really got much shit until she started providing a reason. it's almost exclusively an aspect of her career limited to the last 10 years. before that, she was pretty much adored by the media.

she had it pretty good back then. til Renee sued her in '99. that's actually kind of the beginning of what we're discussing.

Nah. They dubbed TVR a flop until Together Again was released as a single and she started touring which helped save TVR from really flopping lol

I only saw TVR get mixed reviews after its release but most magazines that reviewed it called it one of her best. I still can't get over that technicality issue which TVR debuted at No. 2 on the R&B chart allowing 2Pac's album to debut at No. 1 while it was No. 1 on the pop chart. Didn't really make much sense. shrug

TVR barely missed out the top spot and it's debut week sales were like 150k less than that of janet. "Got 'Til It's Gone" was not even issued as a single to avoid a low chart position and "I Get Lonely" was repressed to get a high debut. In the end it sold less than half of what the previous album did and it only yielded one "real" hit. Compared to post-AFY that would be a hit era for Janet, but compared to 1986-1995 it was the beginning of the end. I guess she waited too long between janet. and TVR...

Yea, RS rated it 3 stars in '97 and I didn't know it opened at #2 on the R&B chart. That doesn't make sense confused

All I know is she got a lot of flack due to the poor commercial success of TVR compared to her previous efforts.

from whom? fact is, you weren't old enough to remember, let alone be a fan when TVR came out. so please show me an article where she got all this flack for the poor sales of TVR. because I was a fan at that time and a very big fan. there was no flack for it.

I'll put it this way: based on your posts, I know old you're NOT. And there's nothing wrong with that. I really don't care. But you weren't there. Some of us where. And we have real-life context from memory for these myths that go around decades after the fact.

I'm not old but I was around when TVR era happened. Even If I was really young. I remember a lot. Plus I saw her live when she toured for the TVR wink

yeah. i don't watch video interviews. sorry, i just don't have the attention span. so please paraphrase here. but i also don't take an artist's spin on something in an interview as fact. the internet was around in 1997 and 1998. please show me any source for this supposed flack that she received for the poor performance of TVR

??? - TVR was her most successful tour, together again was her biggest global hit and the album was critical success. It was a solid era with consistent and arguably her most successful project outside the states. Even AFY broke records and was a success - the end was DJ.
