A-fucking-men! worship

She said exactly what I've been saying. Lady Gaga is a talented visual artist and mimic, but her music is completely boring and unoriginal.

Sounds like sour grapes.

When you really boil it down to just great songs, Gaga has WAY more than MIA.

MIA needs to write some better songs for criticizing anyone else for being "unoriginal" - only music snobs and hardcore fans really care about who's more original than who, anyway.

Gaga doesn't have any great songs.

Are people really that bowled over by image that they shut their ears off completely? Her music is exactly the same as everything else in the mainstream right now.

Have you seen any of the live stuff she did in the UK in 2008 / 2009 ...
Like Beyonce she may not have all the right stuff but man it's better to have her in the charts than Brittney Spears , Taylor Swift and the rest of that rubbish....boring crap that's coming out of the states...

And M.I.A. got a long way to go before she can start talking about "fame" and "music" and "careers" ...

If she can't put it on record she should shut the F**k up! i'd say... lol

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Gaga should write for one of the Eastern European countries in the Eurovision Song Contest because that's what she sounds like.

You don't have to have a lot of money to wear more artsy clothes than a plain t-shirt. There are tons of people who don't have a lot of money but wear the most creative and odd things. No, I rather think someone suggested to Stefani to become more Gaga...

lol There are such things as scissors and needle and thread. You can create quite cool things with that little. You don't have to go "alien" to look creative and like you're being yourself. But Gaga dressed and styled herself like a plain jane when she wasn't famous.

And M.I.A. was SO pressed. She brought up the woman three times without being asked, and NONE of the mentions were pertinent to the question she was asked. Last time I checked, Lady Gaga is not a television program or the Internet, so what the hell does she have to do with this question?

It's strange because M.I.A.'s so good you'd THINK she wouldn't feel threatened, bothered or whatever by "a good mimic", but evidently she does...

Again, jealous.

It almost happened for her and Lady Gaga came out with not only a hit song, but another and another and even her albums sold well, plus everything else.

She has something of a point, but the fact that the question wasn't really prompted shows that she is obsessed! Asking about "X Factor" or any of those shows has nothing to do with Gaga! It's sad because I think she's better than that.

Exactly.
M.I.A. is one of those artists that has their head up their ass because they're "underground" and "meaningful" and they get praise for it. But secretly, she wants the sales and the money as well. Gaga gets a bit of BOTH, she was underground before and got HUGE. So there's a bit of salt in her veins for that....

I've always found the intrigue of Lady Gaga to be that she's so utterly bizarre and unconventional visually while making very mainstream, accessible pop music. She had a quote a while ago about her music being the sugar that washes down all the crazy, out-there themes of her artistry... basically that she's imparting pretty unconventional themes and images in a sugar-coated package of very top 40 songs. So basically MIA's comments are totally invalid because Gaga has never really tried to reinvent the wheel musically. She has always wanted to be a mainstream pop star. And she has a sense of humour about herself. It's mostly critics and fans who ascribe all the those accolades on her. She's always wanted to be an "It Girl", just taken to an extreme level. Her entire career thus far has had tongue firmly planted in cheek. The girl is smart -- she knows that songs about disco sticks, telephones and bluffin with her muffin are neither groundbreaking nor meaningful. Believe me, she is in on the joke. You all are just fools buyin into her hype.

Exactly. Gaga knows full well what she is doing. She wants to be a pop star, but she wants to be different as well. She knows that catchy, danceable beats are the way to go these days, so that's what she does, and then she uses her visuals to add a different meaning.

Her aesthetic is like "Poker Face" itself. Underneath icy bouncy, beats and that irresistible "Puh-puh-puh-poker face" there's LESBIAN SEX! THOUGHTS OF LESBIAN SEX! PUSSYLICKING! Hell, it sounds like she's saying "Fuck her face" too. lol

But clearly that's what Gaga wanted to do. She got that little $850,000 advance from Def Jam, probably put it towards something, then gave it back so she could get her masters (first indication of her being a smart girl). When "Just Dance" came out she was wearing a disco-ball bra which she made herself, had a lightning bolt painted on her face, and making bows out of synthetic hair. By the time The Fame came out she'd started wearing gigantic buttons wrapped in hair and elephant shaped wigs, and always wearing leotards without pants. Now look at her. It's gotten more and more extravagant the more money she's gotten and the more having a record contract and making music and touring and just basically having The Fame she sung of. It's not a persona because she does this all the time.

The thing is that I don't have any problem with Gaga and I do think she's a cool addition to the pop world. I was just thinking that it's funny that she talks as if she never wore "normal" clothes because that's supposedly not her thing. Yeah, she also performed in underwear and the discoball bra before she became famous, so she was never the girl next door, but I still doubt that there was no manager
or record company involved in the change.

Of course people can change and I don't mind Gaga, as I wrote in my previous post. You also make a good point. But it's show biz and that makes me a bit cynical.

What i found odd about that statement Whitney made is that she lump herself in the category of Prince, Michael and Madonna.. Now IMHO Prince was the only one wearing the crazy outfits.. Whitney was just rocking pretty dresses lol

Weren't people trying to emulate Prince, MJ and Madonna? I don't recollect anybody trying to emulate Whitney. confuse

I think what Whitney meant is that they looked unique and they "looked" like stars....

Agree with MIA, no matter what her motives/Reasons for saying it was. Gaga is overrated. Period. Her musik doesn't hold up to her image and what she thinks she is - an original artist. Maybe I'd be ok with her if she didn't take herself so seriously.

well there wasn't really anything that revolutionary, musically, about what Bowie and Grace Jones and Madonna were doing. they were taking pop music and genres and overlaying it with shocking clothes, style, and performances.

in fact, most of the notorious, successful, and remembered performance artist-types used very basic, already-done things at the core of their art (the music) and dressed it up as a statement, a style or a movement.

that's actually kind of their brilliance. it's a transformational art that takes pop and transcends it.

All true, but those acts all had something going for them Lady Gaga's hasn't come anywhere near musically:

The sounds they were creating were interesting, exciting, and memorable. Lady Gaga sounds just like everyone else. That's a problem for an artist whose claim to fame is how weird and different she supposedly is.

she is different and weird compared to everything out there. which is the same tack Bowie and Grace took when they made their splash.

as for the sounds, well, there's nothing particularly revolutionary, or even interesting, about Holiday and Borderline and Lucky Star, etc.
