Happy birthday, Timmy. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Sure he wrote some classic love songs, and pop, but he also wrote some strong lyrics that have depth to them. This is a classic example. The lyrics are often ignored because its a pop/dance song but when you stop and take them in his social commentary is pretty interesting. When thinking of Michael as a lyricist for me the HiStory album is his most personal. Again it was a situation where he couldn't win for many critics. If he didn't write personal songs reflecting on what he had been through they would have skewered him for trying to sweep things under the rug or not addressing what was on everyone's mind. And for some critics the personal and often angry nature of the lyrics put them off "you were done wrong - we get it, get over it". But for me this was Michael at his rawest and most honest lyrically. Swa "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

That's the album that made me a hardcore MJ fan. I always liked him but seeing him go through that in 1993 and then come back with this made me fall in love with him. When I listen to it now though it's not that he's too angry because that was pretty understandable, but it's that it's missing the other parts of his personality that made him so endearing, his innocence and his vulnerability etc. In that way I sometimes prefer Invincible just because it's more varied.
It actually made me quite sad when I relistened to HIStory but I believe only a good album can make you feel anything, so I guess that's a good thing

The audience thought that he was supposed to sing that day, but it turns out that's not the case. In order to not disappoint his fans, he sung "We Are The World". And STILL got criticised lol So much planning goes into these things, I find it very hard to believe no one explicitly says this is what is going to happen. I still don't understand why anyone thought he was going to perform as he didn't have anything to promote. It was just the WMA trying to hype up their show because otherwise no-one would have paid any attention to it. As for the VMA's; MTV did what they did, because MTV is all about being POPular, and at that time mocking Michael was just that (and repetition it seems; Jack Black did a sketch on it the following year). Least he got some love the next year at the BET awards, probably one of the last times everyone saw MJ truly happy on stage (and damn he looked fine in those jeans!). Oh yeah, the black media has always supported MJ, even until death, as he always looks mighty fine

I often thought after his passing, if the song did mean his actual literal brothers, and since the Estate had to approve the final cut of the film, might have requested it be taken out. Just a thought. MJ Fan 1992-Forever
