It's Back-Old School R&B Song Of The Day(1/21/02)- The O'Jays- Brandy Since Finess and Harlepolis have been coming up with some great tunes of the day, I figured I'd bring back my old school R&B song of the day picks.
This is a very heartfelt song from The O'Jays album So Full Of Lovealbum released in 1978. This album was the bomb{this album contained the hit "Used To Be My Girl" and "Cry Together"}. But this song used to get heavy airplay on R&B radio. The song generated a little controversy in 1978 when most people thought that it was a woman that lead singer Walter Williams was singing about. However, a few eyebrows went up with it was learned that it wasn't a woman that the lead singer misses, but rather his PET DOG. If you listen to the second verse of this song carefully, you'll hear that it is indeed a dog he is singing about. "My best friend's gone...I'm so all alone" I kinda miss you Brandy...I'm so all alone when are you coming back home"?" Enjoy and have a good one!!! For years,I had heard that this song is really about a dog. There's a line in the song that goes "I was in love when they put her down on my doorstep in the rain",which pretty much confirms that theory.
Nevertheless,"Brandy" is a kickass song, really soulful and dramatic..."sipping on a cherry soda pop, building houses made of sand...like a little child in a fantasy, just a fraction of a man".It's a heartfelt performance by those reliable O'Jays. I had some in December but the org went down{as you all know}. Said I was gonna roll some out during black music month in June. Oh what the heck, I'll just roll some out now...
