Rappers Versus Singers

I remember hearing reports that some R&B artists in the 80s didn't accept Rap or consider is real music and the Hip-Hop community took offense to it. Does anyone know what the relationship between Rappers and R&B singers is like today? Is there still beef?

I wouldnt say there's a beef between the two. Most rappers sing on tracks and most singers are rapping on tracks.

I never got that impression, but I didn't officially get into rap until "Fairytale Lover" by UTFO. Do you remember who made that comment and when?

The only good rapper is the one that's dead on it.

No thanks to P Diddy who popularize that mess. lol And I'm talking about in terms of Rap and R&B together.

i wouldnt mind a rapper "singing" on a hook but the track is usually transformed into a weak attempt at a love song whenever that decision is made.

i feel the same way about autotune, i like the way it sounds but why does it have to be used in the same fashion every time?

The "beef" ended in 1989, which was definitely within my favorite hip-hop era of 88-93. I think THIS song confirms this:

Correct on both counts! nod

The moment Sean Combs used Mary J. Blige to invent hip-hop soul during them makings of What's The 411 album, it was also the moment that r&b/soul "died" and hip-hop/r&b was "born". Sean did it by taking hip-hop tracks that anyone could've rap on and told Mary to sing on them instead.

Playing the hip-hop tracks at a downtempo was NOT a new idea. Dr. Dre & his half-brother Warren G were already doing it first when they invented G-Funk (READ: a slower version of George Clinton's P-Funk sound). But Sean Combs would take the downtempo gimmick too far by slowing down every thing he "produced" and/or sampled.
disbelief lol
