How so?

When it comes to prices, Amoeba has Rasputin beat on new releases but Rasputin gets them sometimes when it comes to used items

While Amoeba has a great vinyl section, Rasputin' section has more and is better organized

The video sections: Amoeba has a great section, but the music dvd sections are horrible organized and seperated.

Rasputin's world music area is good, but Amoeba's section is even more diverse

hmmm so I should probably check out the various Rasputins' in the Bay Area, huh?

I generally agree with this, except, when it comes to vinyl selection, it depends on the stores you are talking about. The vinyl section at the Powell Street Rasputin is meh.

If you participated in Record Store Day, please post about your experience. I hit my three regular spots (although I'm sure there are more in the Detroit area, but I'm only going to go so far away from home although if you have recommendations please tell).

First, Memories and Melodies, probably my favorite overall however I can criticize the price and the fact that they carry some stuff that they shouldn't.....if you know what I mean....I almost bought "The Family" on CD and then figured, "Nah" and put it back. Their CD selection is amazing, though! I mean, they have nearly everything unused (I wanted to say "new", but what I really mean is that they have older stuff that might be out of print available). Their prices are high, but normal of course by indie record store standards. Their used selection never seems all that impressive when it comes to CDs, but their vinyl....wow! They have a whole room of $1 records (enter at your own risk and of course they aren't in the best shape) as well as a another with 12" dance singles from all kinds of areas of dance. Unfortunately, they don't always have the highest standards and while they carry everything, sadly alot of their records are marked up with stickers and writing from terrible owners (and not just the $1 room...the dance singles are really messed up along with their regular. Anyway, I bought $26 in stuff (only one CD, which I'm listening to now, Human League "Crash" reissue with bonus extended mixes which was $15.99, same price as Amazon). I also like that they really care about music there but also carry old board games and having an amazing selection of old toys and lunchboxes, but you better bring some major money!). And they have great artwork, including picture discs....that can't be cheap to do, can it?...on the walls.

Next is Record Time. They definitely seem to have standards and unlike the other places mentioned, a real staff of busy bodies (where the people at M&M are pretty relaxed...actually, at RecordTime, maybe they just try to look busy). It's also very spread out (maybe the biggest building....If M&M is bigger, then their selection is even more impressive because it's packed)! All the vinyl seems like it is in amazing shape (including the jackets). They have a bargain room, but it seems like all of the CDs are singles, total unknowns and in general just odd reminders why some CDs never should have been made). I wasn't in much of a mood to buy CDs (and what I saw used didn't knock my socks, either) and I must not have found much in their vinyl, cause I only spent like $9. Next time they have a sale (which they do often) on CDs (and their pretty good about buying Cds as well), I'll go back.

Last is Car City Records. Of the three, it's the most of a hole in the wall (and like Record Time, it opens up in the back....so is that literally a hole in the wall?). And this sounds really bad, but there were times when it just stank like a frat that wouldn't leave! The CD selection seemed almost bleak although I almost bought an XTC disc. Sadly, I remember there were two used two CDs that I wanted to get last time and didn't...and of course I didn't see them there this time...it might have been two years ago when I went there last). The only saving grace here is their used R&B section.....but especially their used $1 R&B section! Maybe this is also about their standards (cause not everything is in great shape). Lots of rarities and cool stuff in both! Their dollar rock section is pretty impressive, but a lot of stuff to dig through and in general, not clean (I must bring Purrel or something like that with me next time). Spent $13.50, but considering I'm taking a chance with the $1 vinyl, I might skip it next time unless I'm looking for something specific.

I'll add my full list of purchases here. Got some cool stuff! Please share your experiences.

The stores here don't offer anything special.

Hell, I'm surprised they didn't close early for their "holiday"

I hit Amoeba in Berkeley and 1234Go in Oakland. I was in and out at both places, so did not hang out for any on-site festivities, but I did get some RSD releases.

Fela Kuti 10" EP
Flaming Lips/Stardeath/White Dwarfs - Dark Side of the Moon vinyl
John Lennon - Singles Bag 7"
Peter Gabriel/Stephen Merritt - split 7" single
Peter Gabriel/Bon Iver - split 7" single
Charlotte Gainsbourg - (Beck remix) 7" single
REM - Chronic Town blue vinyl reissue
Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex white vinyl reissue
Sonic Youth - EVOL pink vinyl reissue
Sonic Youth - Hits Are For Squares Double LP
Velvet Underground Live 1969 Vol. 1 - vinyl
Wilco - Kicking Television vinyl box set
Jimi Hendrix - Live at Clark University vinyl
The Hold Steady - Heaven is Forever clear vinyl (this is a really good album).
The Rolling Stones - Plunder My Soul 7" (An Exile outtake that kicks ass).
Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Live at Hollywood High School 7"

I love RSD.

I am absolutely in awe of Bon Iver's take on "Come Talk To Me." It is extraordinarily beautiful.

I didn't particpate.... I forgot I was going on vacation and I can't get back! lol BUT. I had a list and daughter found what I really wanted.

1. Earl Klugh - Marvin & Tige soundtrack

2. Wilbur Harden - The King And I

woot!

One song I can't find because I don't know the title nor the artist and can now only remember a couple of lines from the song.. I think it came out in the late 80's to early 90's.

" I wanna be, I wanna be....can't live without you
.....
.....
.....
I'm, living on the outside of your loving heart....."

The last part repeat through out the song or part of the chorus. It's a guy that sings it. That's all I have, I've been obsessing over this song for twenty years. confused

Last year was fun and I picked up some things.

THis year there were lines, scavengers and no fun. I love the idea though... even though I only end up buying oldies.

Same here. It's probably a better idea than an actual practice becuase I wasn't willing to get there super early to pick up any of the exclusives (which only mildly interested me....the UK had stuff I was more interested in like PSB and Grace Jones...I actually bought a Grace Jones LP).

It was one of the first ones. "Fame". I figured it was rare, so I better get it! I saw a few copies of "Muse" but I already own the download. But it would be dumb not to own that one, too!

i would LOVE to get my hands on that PSB release, or at least the 2 tracks. Hopefully they get wider release eventually.
