Is Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop a great album? This won a grammy and has been recommended to me in the past. Terry Bozio is a big name in the drum world too. I used to have it and I listened to it a couple of times but was completely underwhelmed, I remember thinking that most of it seemed to consist of 'atmospheric noise'. I lost that copy when my computer crashed and about to get it again. I'm curious what everyone else's opinion on it is, it seems like it's critical prasie could have easily been a result of it being a 'return to rock' album rathr than it's actualy quality, Grammys and Oscars often seem to be given out for those reasons. "Ooh, he's gone back to what made us love him in the first place" ya know?
Anyway hit me with any related knowledge on Jeff, he's cool...

I have not listened to it for a while, but it was a little hard for me to get into, as well. It was creative, interesting, but I just didn't really dig it.
But I watched the DVD live at Ronnie Scott's and he played a few songs from it, if I recall right, and I liked them just fine. So maybe I wasn't mature enough for it back then! My Legacy

I just played his new album Emotion and Commotion last night & thought it'd be a lot of widdly-woo hot shot guitar riffs. Instead it's more like a Les Paul album! There are some soulful female vocals, some subtle, new-agey instrumentals, covers of standards (Over the Rainbow, I Put A Spell On You) and just a couple of stomping guitar workouts with Rhonda Smith on bass. I didn't know quite what to expect but it was still kind of a surprise.
If I remember correctly, Guitar Shop was all about the widdly-woo. This new one is about tunes and shades. I like it!

Personally, I think it's a very good album.
Most tunes are collaborations between Jeff Beck, Terry Bozzio & Tony Hymas. There are 2 beautiful ballads, JB's forte imo, (Where Were You & Two Rivers). An interesting reggae feel piece, Behind The Veil. I saw him perform this live a few years ago with world class violinist L Shankar. This piece showcases his vibrato bar control, being able to spot on hit eastern mode notes (1/4 tones) along with L Shankar's violin melodies. Along with a cool rocker that has become a part of his standard set the past few years (Big Block). I think it is a great album. This is the album that introduced me to Jeff Beck when I was 19 years old. It was also the first time I saw him, back in 1989. I can't wait to see Rhonda play with him. I will be checking out his new lineup on April 16 at the Nob Hill Masonic Center in SF.

I have the audio recording of that show, and there is no violin on "Behind The Veil". Music Royalty in Motion

A decent Jeff Beck album, but it sorely lacks bass. Tony Hymas is not the greatest synth bassist,as compared to Jan Hammer. So the album sufders in the bottom department IMHO. Overall a guitar tour-de-force Music Royalty in Motion
