I didn't label him that, the media did. I heard the term used on a local radio station soon after his arrest.

Wow, I certainly have been misunderstood. What I meant when I said "thug lover" was, he better not get arrested again or he will never be anything more than a thug lover. The man has real talent and I would like to see him go far, but getting arrested isn't going to help him. As far as the comments about D being "too black"...I think many of you are just a little "too much". Get over it already!!!

An arrest for car offences makes him a "Thug lover"? He's never once linked himself with the term "thug" (Unlike R.Kelly, 2Pac etc etc) so it just seemed strange to label him with it is all.
D'angelo scares alot of folks with His Vibe.I always say keep it Black&Raw.He never said jack about being a Thug.

Oh great the media label him "thug lover" and he's a "thug lover". On a lesser note the media often label R&B/Soul artists "Rap" or "hip-hop" just for lack of research.

Are there any decent contemporary funk artists, Prince aside? And funk artists who are not just rehashing old stuff, going for a 'retro' sound, but who are actually doing something fresh?

There must be. Who are they?

Critics loved Cee-Lo's solo album when it came out but other than a few strong cuts, it didn't rock my world. I would download a few tracks and check it out though. It could be the start of a funk revival

The BLACK dj on the BLACK radio station (wblk) made the comment about D turning into a thug and called him a thug lover. I guess the BLACK dj is just not BLACK enough for some of you. I don't know what is meant by "his vibe scares" people? That's just ridiculous.

White Society labels Black Work.take notes of that statement White Society Labels Black Work,etc...a Black DJ was doing what the Massa told Him too do.D'angelo is a Music Artist period.I ain't scared of D'angelo&don't consider the Brother a Thug.He ain't soft&all Hollywood like that Business wants Cats too be.He enjoys what He does but the Cat ain't fakin the Funk.Too Country&Solid within Himself too play Him as a Industry Buffon.
