Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole?

Hard choice. I don't like Frank's post 50s stuff, but Nat is always magic

Mr. Sinatra overrated? Please. rolleyes

really, please. brick

Two amazing, brilliant artist who brought something unique to music.

Mr.Sinatra was exceptional music arranger and Mr. King piano skills can't be denied, he was the originator of the guitar/bass/piano trio format, was a major influenced on Oscar Peterson piano playing.

Can't pick, like them both.

Why would one have 2 pick one over the other???

There R at least two dozen jazz singers that I love.

Why compare, unless it's 2 discuss what makes them unique?

Sinatra = Phrasing, Rhythm, Swing, incredible breath technique. Sinatra was more than a fantastic vocalist. Every arranger and writer has said how musical he is, and with an impeccable ear.

Nat King Cole = Smooth, beautiful control, softer baritone.

Both wonderful voices, but totally different.

I'll take Nat over Frank. Mostly because Nat's styling was brilliant to me. Frank was great also, but to me Nat was definitely the king.

And Tim, my opinion has nothing to do with Sinatra being white, LOL. For example, I think Dean Martin was much better than Frank as a vocalist. hmph!

But of course, Nat was better than Dean too, heh heh. tease

Sinatra insistenced on developing his own style and arrangements for whatever music he sang. Frank Sinatra just didn't come in and arranger Nelson Riddle (Captial Records Years) hand him the sheet music and he started recording. Mr. Riddle said, Mr. Sinarta was a full participant and contributor in how the music he sung was arranged. Sinatra unique phrasing of lyrics... a jazzy syncopation of melody lines. Miles Davis said, Sinatra was a major influence if not the major influence on how he approached playing the trumpet. "I wanted to sound like Frank sung."

to mention Sinatra and Elvis in the same sentence, BLASPEMY. disbelief

biggrin

But I don't have enough knowledge to differentiate the vertical.
