Best breaks/bridges in a song? A recent thread on the Brothers Johnson got me to thinking how much I LOVE the Shuggie Otis/Lee Ritenour guitar solo section of "Strawberry Letter 23." It's downright exhilarating!
What song breakdowns or bridges are your favorites? [Edited 3/23/10 22:02pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

When I think of musical "bridges", this prior post comes to mind.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ...Your Precious Love With that amazing bridge... VoicesCarry gave a definitive qoute when I did a post on this tune some years ago. tA: "And the bridge, the bridge. It's like a good desert after a great meal." VoicesCarry: "And tA, that ain't a bridge, that is the most delicate of Victorian arches." http://prince.org/msg/8/150534 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The musical bridge in this song comes at the 1:40 mark. "To find a LOVE like yours is RARE these daaaaays..."
Now if that ain't soulful crooning I don't know what it is and I love Tammi's sassy comeback too! "I look in the mirror and I'm GLAD to seeeee..."

I wouldn't say it's the best, but isn't the break down in "Dancing Machine" like the most famous break ever? Like, doesn't everyone know when that break comes on to stop what you're doing, do the robot, and then continue on in whatever task you were doing? I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

The break in "Funky Drummer" of course and "Talking Loud and Saying Nothing" with James & Bobby singing in unison, "keep on singing".

Hip hop is kinda built around this sort of thing. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.”

I'm pretty sure Jimi or Stevie wrote it, whatever it is...
I'm partial to the "bridge/break" on Jimi's "Rainy Day/Still Raining..." And, the tag that leads to the vamp of Stevie's "I Believe" -- particularly because of the wonderful way that song develops and builds. But, if you're talking strict bridges or breaks, I might have to give the nod to the one in Prince's "Mountains." That's some classy stuff. I was shocked to hear the girls say that was all his. I'd been giving them credit for it in error.

Commodore's "Wonderland" is one of my favorites.
Also... Van Halen's "Jump" Art of Noise's "Moments in Love"

Buddy Miles Express... ...Let You Lovelight Shine You could start at the top or wait for the 2:23 mark ( Never thought this one would show up on YouTube.) I believe we discussed this one before, Kool & The Gang... ...Music Is The Message (2:33) Thinking outside the box a bit, Led Zeppelin... ...Good Times, Bad Times Right at the top or you could do wonders with those crazy Bonham licks between verses ...What Is And What Should Never Be (the outro at the 3:31- 3:42 mark) Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
