WaterInYourBath said: whitechocolatebrotha said: Wow...A woman who preaches so much love in her music disguises it with so much hatred. It's pathetic, really. It's not like SHE was a slave, which so many (like herself) seem 2 frequently and conveniently "hark back to" in order to drive their OWN obvious hatred home. She's obviously racist herself. I never ONCE looked at Jill Scott and "winced" at the sight of a large woman singing some of my favorite songs. I'm not like that. That's the problem with so many. They ARE like that. Furthermore, I'm a white brotha and if for ONE SECOND, I even voiced a similar remark, it would INSTANTLY go down as being racist, so Miss Jilly from Philly (and a whole lotta others like her) need 2 put themselves in "check." My Godmother's a Black woman. Never in my entire life, has she ever loved me less because I'm vanilla. She loves me for ME. I was also raised Jewish. I heard all that crap growin' up about "marrying your own kind," "dating outside your religion," etc...And y'know what? I always knew it was wrong. It's judgmental, it's hateful and it's prejudicial, no matter how you cut it up. Similarly, I wasn't one of those who crossed the River Jordan and/or was persecuted by any adversaries (except maybe in grade school when an occasional penney would be tossed my way as I walked on by.) Love is love no matter how u slice it up and love, has (or SHOULD have) no color. To think otherwise, is conditioning which is handed down and perpetuated throughout the ages. It's ignorant, it's intolerable and it's still here today. Miss Jill needs 2 shut her mouth and keep ugliness like this out of the public sector. It's not like she can afford to voice thoughts like these with her music sales steadily dwindling. I loved her "words and sounds." After reading this, I'm debating whether or not to toss all my CD's (by her) to the used record store for cash or credit. It spells racism and people have the audacity to wonder why it's still here. It's because of attitudes like hers. She wants 2 wince? She should record herself voicing the aformentioned hideousness and wince at that. And they say we're making progress? Where? Show me. I'm still seeing, hearing and reading it to this day. And what's there "to get?" Love has NO COLOR, afterall. Isn't that what I've always heard in MY life? I'll keep on perpetuating that belief, because it's beautiful and it's real and it doesn't reek of judgement. Beautifully Human, huh? Think again, You're showin' your TRUE colors and they ain't so pretty now. "Hate on me" if ya wanna, but you KNOW I'm right. Peace.
Well, I'll be darned. Are you a "white brotha" like Justin Timberlake or Jon B? If the latter, I was talking about how rare you all are a few pages ago, lol. LOL! And nowhere does she question the validity of REAL interracial love nor does she say that there's anything wrong with it. But, as usual, let a black person speak their OWN personal truth and folks who do not have nary a clue about what that truly is are in a hurry to label us as racist. SSDD. As far as I can see, she never even mentions love. She never gets that far. She just says that she winces any time she sees a white woman on the arm of a black man she considers to be desirable. Even when she talks about her friend, she never considers whether their love is "real" or not, in fact she never mentions the wife at all, except as a 'caucasian woman'. The true nature of their relationship is never even brought up. She just says that, immediately when she heard what the wife's skin colour was, she felt a pinch. If she'd phrased her article like most people on here are interpreting it (that it bothers her when black men marry white women exclusively for some perceived notion of status), I don't think a single person on here, black or white, would be disagreeing with her. First of all, it's not an article. Second, she does mention love if you actually read her statement. Third, trying to put the shoe on the other foot does not work in this instance because it is black women who are constantly rejected by MOST segments of Western society not white women. Therefore, it ain't the same thing. But, nice try.

But wouldn't it be easier to show love to the 90% of brothas that date black women rather than focus on the 10% that are hooked up with "others"? See this is my problem with Jill's mentality as well as many sistas. Its this heirachy mentality - this black "caste system" that lends itself to the distribution of baseless information. I call it the Essence magazine mentality. These magazines focus on keeping women in panic mode so that they can sell them products. Essence, Cosmopolitan, etc. - they all spread this lie that black men aren't interested in black women. Black men know that this is a lie. Statistically (factual CENSUS information), the majority of black men date and marry black women. The problem is the TELEVISION and MEDIA are always pointing out the exceptions to the rule and even going so far as to reward the exceptions to the rule. They have a goal - TO SELL YOU SOMETHING. They want to keep you in panic mode so you will buy their advertisers' makeup, cremes, comfort food, etc. If sistas in general would bypass the junk news they get from magazines and television and recognize the brothas that pursue them instead of writing them off because they don't make enough money or because they aren't "ballin'" then many sistas would be a lot happier overall. There is a movement in this country to divide black men and black women and I hate to say it but it seems as if sistas are a bit less hip to the game than brothas are. The media touts certain black men with "others" for wives and then games sistas into believing that these are the men they should be desiring, then herds them into the adopting the belief that the set of men that they have singled out are the men they should all be competing for. Regular brothas are left on the sidelines and so they either seek companionship elsewhere or stay solo and grow old and bitter.

Talking as a black woman, people can, love, date or marry who they like it is a free world. However, that is not to say there isn't a certain type of black man and in some cases women, who view their white partners as trophies.
One of the reasons why I admire Obama, is that it would have been so easy for him to marry a white woman, afterall his mother was white and before Michelle he did have white partners. I don't think Obama's main ambition was always to be President, but just to be successful in whatever he did. He choose Michelle, who complimented him and obviously loves him and helped him with his ambitions and that's what love and marriage should be about first and foremost. [Edited 3/29/10 14:32pm]

I realized this was the reason why no one was hearing me yesterday. I think I have an inkling about Jill's point now (but only so far, I'm still a white dude). And if i'm not mistaken this was just a blog and I don't think she meant it to be a completely, thought out dissertation on her feelings about interracial dating. Her question IMO isn't about why black men marry white women but moreso about why so many refuse to even consider dating their own women, who look like their mothers and sisters. That's a valid question that deserves discussion amnong US to resolve. That rejection hurts in all kinds of ways and I think she was just trying to explore that. But instead, she's getting labeled racist by a bunch of fucking hypocrites some of whom broke their fucking necks to defend John Mayer's ass.
