I appreciate Jill's honesty.

I still think the bottom line is jealousy. Jill fancies herself an intelligent black woman so when she sees her "equal" (intelligent black male) choosing to date a white woman instead, she's jealous. First the white bitch is born with "good hair," and now this! I would be upset too. Jill is a walking stereotype so that's got to be hard for her.

People need to stop bashing her, like seriously, I mean although I don't entirely care or agree with her, I see where's she's coming from, and its not like she wasn't neccessarily going "White women need to stop taking our black me." Sheesh, some people need a reality check.

sheesh l dont know where u get off by sayin white women taking the black men
can l just point something out to u
its not the white women who go and take the black men
its just when the attraction happen between 2 people started
u cant blame white women alone if the black men go to the white women....
u cannot go round and accusing every white female on this planet
u got no proof how the attraction started...
l know someone shes white and married to a black man and they have been married for a very long time...
she didnt go to him ,.. he was the one who went to her
so how can u sit there and say the white woman takes the black man huh ????
maybe u need to look a bit more and think and act before u go and accuse a white person....never judge no one..like GOD says do not JUDGE my dear...
u obviously got a issues problems with race...

Jill is speaking out against black men discriminating against black women. there is nothing wrong with that.

I agree. I see a person confronting their own pain and discomfort with an issue they have, and how the issue in question makes them feel. I think it's brave to be that honest about your issues, and to ask yourself why you feel the way you do.

That's why I'm dying with laughter cuz everybody is up in arms ASSuming she said something she didn't EVEN say. And nowhere does she question the validity of REAL interracial love nor does she say that there's anything wrong with it. But, as usual, let a black person speak their OWN personal truth and folks who do not have nary a clue about what that truly is are in a hurry to label us as racist. SSDD. shrug

As far as I can see, she never even mentions love. She never gets that far. She just says that she winces any time she sees a white woman on the arm of a black man she considers to be desirable. Even when she talks about her friend, she never considers whether their love is "real" or not, in fact she never mentions the wife at all, except as a 'caucasian woman'. The true nature of their relationship is never even brought up. She just says that, immediately when she heard what the wife's skin colour was, she felt a pinch. If she'd phrased her article like most people on here are interpreting it (that it bothers her when black men marry white women exclusively for some perceived notion of status), I don't think a single person on here, black or white, would be disagreeing with her.

I reacted a little emotionally at first (i.e I felt insulted because I've been attracted to black women), but I think this is perhaps a case of Scott not articulating her views properly. Her line of reasoning is not fully formed or cohesive. That is obvious in her conclusion; the way it just finishes hanging.

Also, it is a glimpse into her psyche. Scott only appears concerned about successful black men dating white women, rather than those in so-called menial positions.

There is a sense of judgmentalism here, a blanket assertion in place of something that should, I think, be individual, but looking at comments here there are obviously other black women who feel the same way.

she mentions success because to many Black women it seems that to a Black man, reaching the pinnacle of success in America includes having a white woman on his arm....

she sounds ambiguous because she really is a loving soul, and it is hard to understand as a loving soul why anyone would want to hate you and not be with you because of your race and your sex....

What she said was:
'You know the moment when you realize that fine, accomplished brother is with a White woman? Let's call it "the wince."'

What that meant was she only cares if its a "fine, accomplished, brotha".

Her point was judgmental, not racist.
I'm sure she wouldn't date just any black man based solely on the fact that he's black, so it stands to reason that not every "fine, accomplished, brotha" would be compatible with her or attracted to her either.
Mating is a very personal thing and certainly based on more than just color. In truth, it has less to do with color in most cases. There are still fewer blk/white interracial relationships than there are any other interracial pairings in the U.S. Its not as if that little 9-10% would actually narrow Jill Scott's chances at a man. She's Jill-f*ckin'-Scott! Her narrowing the spectrum to "fine, accomplished, brothas" indicate her own bias. I guess truck drivers, postmen, steel workers, etc. are out?
Part of the beauty of any relationship is finding someone you can struggle with and who's got your back. There are lots of brothas who love Jill Scott. I'm sure they would be glad to have her but they might not be accomplished enough.
The thing about "accomplished" men is that most are looking for a wife and someone to have their kids and take care of home - not someone with a music career who has to be on the road. That too, is a factor for her to consider.
As for those shouting "racist" -
The audacity of white males to call someone racist is laughable, especially with all of the atrocious acts of hate that have been committed in the U.S. by white males as recently as a couple of years ago as well as the racially based social exclusion that continues to this day that is just as widespread as its ever been.
White males calling black people racist is the equivalent of Germans calling Jews antisemitic. Its an "eyeroll" moment for everybody.
The very reason Jill probably feels that way is due to her knowledge of history and her love for her people and her understanding of the struggle black folk have EVEN TODAY in America. This is still a white male dominated society even with a black President, so things have changed but not as drastically as some pretend. Still, she needs to look at interracial relationships as well as ANY relationship on a case-by-case level and not a race-by-race level because every couple is different regardless of the race of the participants.

Well said BK.

Wow...A woman who preaches so much love in her music disguises it with so much hatred. It's pathetic, really. It's not like SHE was a slave, which so many (like herself) seem 2 frequently and conveniently "hark back to" in order to drive their OWN obvious hatred home. She's obviously racist herself. I never ONCE looked at Jill Scott and "winced" at the sight of a large woman singing some of my favorite songs. I'm not like that. That's the problem with so many. They ARE like that. Furthermore, I'm a white brotha and if for ONE SECOND, I even voiced a similar remark, it would INSTANTLY go down as being racist, so Miss Jilly from Philly (and a whole lotta others like her) need 2 put themselves in "check." My Godmother's a Black woman. Never in my entire life, has she ever loved me less because I'm vanilla. She loves me for ME. I was also raised Jewish. I heard all that crap growin' up about "marrying your own kind," "dating outside your religion," etc...And y'know what? I always knew it was wrong. It's judgmental, it's hateful and it's prejudicial, no matter how you cut it up. Similarly, I wasn't one of those who crossed the River Jordan and/or was persecuted by any adversaries (except maybe in grade school when an occasional penney would be tossed my way as I walked on by.) Love is love no matter how u slice it up and love, has (or SHOULD have) no color. To think otherwise, is conditioning which is handed down and perpetuated throughout the ages. It's ignorant, it's intolerable and it's still here today. Miss Jill needs 2 shut her mouth and keep ugliness like this out of the public sector. It's not like she can afford to voice thoughts like these with her music sales steadily dwindling. I loved her "words and sounds." After reading this, I'm debating whether or not to toss all my CD's (by her) to the used record store for cash or credit. It spells racism and people have the audacity to wonder why it's still here. It's because of attitudes like hers. She wants 2 wince? She should record herself voicing the aformentioned hideousness and wince at that. And they say we're making progress? Where? Show me. I'm still seeing, hearing and reading it to this day. And what's there "to get?" Love has NO COLOR, afterall. Isn't that what I've always heard in MY life? I'll keep on perpetuating that belief, because it's beautiful and it's real and it doesn't reek of judgement. Beautifully Human, huh? Think again, You're showin' your TRUE colors and they ain't so pretty now. "Hate on me" if ya wanna, but you KNOW I'm right. Peace.

lol Yeah, the comedy continues. Were you this upset when John Mayer made HIS actually racist and disrespectful comments about black women? Did you post on THAT thread too? hmmm

LOL @ the aggressive and vicious tone of your obviously racist outlook. I get upset with ANYTHING that even SMELLS racist, so don't be pullin' no color cards with ME. You sound exTRMELY ignorant and furthermore, it's people like yourself and people like Jill Scott who, rather than END the cycle, perpetuate it. Like I said in my previous post, YOU weren't THERE. yeah I will throw prince in there. I hate to but even though he has dated women of nearly every hue (and is a light brotha himself),,,,he does tend to go very public with his lighter gfs and has put a ring on it twice. He put a ring on a browners sistah but she got upstaged.

Yeah, Isaiah Washington. Also Lawrence Fishburne, Spike Lee, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Steve Harvey, TI, Snoop Dogg.....

.....

That's about it. lol And Billy Dee Williams should also go on the other list. I just KNOW that hurt a lot of Black women back in the 80s, lol.

It seems like the non-black females are upset because their non-black families/friends give them a hard time for slobbin black knobs, so they have to take it out on somebody. Of course they're going to blame the jealous, racist black females for coming between them and the men they love. rolleyes

Please get it through your heads that black women are not jealous/racist. Most of the black men that are involved with non-black females are losers anyway, so we don't want them. I damn sure don't want a Kobe, a Tiger, etc. If that's what you call true love, then you can keep it to yourselves. Once again, black women are frustrated because they're having problems finding suitable mates, but black men aren't having any trouble at all. But I know you're not listening. So you ignorant, racially unaware people can keep screwing your equally ignorant, racially unaware, self-hating black men because the rest of us don't care. We know that you're a lost cause.
