Our minds do understand that people of all races find genuine love in many places. We dig that the world is full of amazing options. But underneath, there is a bite, no matter the ointment, that has yet to stop burning. Some may find these thoughts to be hurtful. That is not my intent. I'm just sayin'.

I actually can agree to this sentiment. Like she said, not everyone's gonna like this but it seems like she's tolerating it even though there's a "wince" there. Least she ain't douchey like John Mayer or that woman who attacked Jay-Z on the tabloids.

Our history's very complicated but I love romance of all sorts too. I can SEE why Jill wouldn't but hey, she knows it's a free country and people are gonna do what they're gonna do.

So I'm DEFINITELY not gonna attack her for it.

but she's NOT saying she's against interracial love.

The wince comes from...as a Black woman, you get this brief thought like "my brutha, are you in love, or are you in luv with an ideal?" No other dynamic induces that. I don't wince to see a Black man with an Asian woman (maybe slightly with a Latina because some men thinks Latinas are white) or another man because it doesn't carry that thought of trophyism.

It's like if I meet a man of a different race (and I have) and they start telling me they love Black women because blah blah blah, and I'm sitting their like "do you love me for me or just the color of my skin the supposed size of my booty, and because you think I am sexually loose?"

That's why I'm dying with laughter cuz everybody is up in arms ASSuming she said something she didn't EVEN say. And nowhere does she question the validity of REAL interracial love nor does she say that there's anything wrong with it. But, as usual, let a black person speak their OWN personal truth and folks who do not have nary a clue about what that truly is are in a hurry to label us as racist. SSDD. shrug

What she said was:
'You know the moment when you realize that fine, accomplished brother is with a White woman? Let's call it "the wince."'

What that meant was she only cares if its a "fine, accomplished, brotha".

Her point was judgmental, not racist.
I'm sure she wouldn't date just any black man based solely on the fact that he's black, so it stands to reason that not every "fine, accomplished, brotha" would be compatible with her or attracted to her either.
Mating is a very personal thing and certainly based on more than just color. In truth, it has less to do with color in most cases. There are still fewer blk/white interracial relationships than there are any other interracial pairings in the U.S. Its not as if that little 9-10% would actually narrow Jill Scott's chances at a man. She's Jill-f*ckin'-Scott! Her narrowing the spectrum to "fine, accomplished, brothas" indicate her own bias. I guess truck drivers, postmen, steel workers, etc. are out?
Part of the beauty of any relationship is finding someone you can struggle with and who's got your back. There are lots of brothas who love Jill Scott. I'm sure they would be glad to have her but they might not be accomplished enough.
The thing about "accomplished" men is that most are looking for a wife and someone to have their kids and take care of home - not someone with a music career who has to be on the road. That too, is a factor for her to consider.
As for those shouting "racist" -
The audacity of white males to call someone racist is laughable, especially with all of the atrocious acts of hate that have been committed in the U.S. by white males as recently as a couple of years ago as well as the racially based social exclusion that continues to this day that is just as widespread as its ever been.
White males calling black people racist is the equivalent of Germans calling Jews antisemitic. Its an "eyeroll" moment for everybody.
The very reason Jill probably feels that way is due to her knowledge of history and her love for her people and her understanding of the struggle black folk have EVEN TODAY in America. This is still a white male dominated society even with a black President, so things have changed but not as drastically as some pretend. Still, she needs to look at interracial relationships as well as ANY relationship on a case-by-case level and not a race-by-race level because every couple is different regardless of the race of the participants.

faint

I wouldn't care much if the brotha was missing some teef his damself and was cockeyed or sumthin'. But when you see those nice looking brothas that seem like they take baths, have a steady job, can speak good english, are not too out of shape and have some sense about them...walking in with Miss White Homeless & Ugly on their arms....well it just don't make a lick of sense.

nod Because even THAT dude would not want to be married to a black woman.

Perfect example, I was watching Divorce Court the other day. I don't usually watch this mess but it comes on after Wendy and I just had it on. There's a black man asking for a divorce from his white wife who had a young child with him and was 8 months pregnant with the 2nd one.

When the black female judge asked him why he wanted a divorce his response was:
"She's just too damn ghetto. If I had wanted a ghetto wife I woulda married a black woman." confused neutral

Keep in mind, this fucka was unemployed, uneducated, and deserting his wife with two babies but he still thought he was above marrying ANY black women.

Well, I don't wince when I see a beautiful sista with some bum looking white guy.
Why? Because I'm not dating her. I don't care. It saddens me more to see single, available sistas pass up good brothas in search of lames and thugs than it does to see a sista who has already made her choice.

She was black as the night
Louie was whiter than white
Danger, danger when you taste brown sugar
Louie fell in love overnight

Nothing bad, it was good
Louie had the best girl he could
When he took her home
To meet his mama and papa
Louie knew just where he stood

Louie Louie Louie, Louie
Louie Louie Lou-I
Louie Louie Louie
Louie Louie you're gonna cry

There he stood in the night
Knowing what's wrong from what's right
He took her home to meet his mama and papa
Man, he had a terrible fright

Louie nearly caused a scene
Wishin' it was a dream
Ain't no diff'rence if you're black or white
Brothers, you know what I mean

Louie Louie Louie, Louie
Louie Louie Lou-I
Louie Louie Louie
Louie Louie you're gonna cry

I reacted a little emotionally at first (i.e I felt insulted because I've been attracted to black women), but I think this is perhaps a case of Scott not articulating her views properly. Her line of reasoning is not fully formed or cohesive. That is obvious in her conclusion; the way it just finishes hanging.

Also, it is a glimpse into her psyche. Scott only appears concerned about successful black men dating white women, rather than those in so-called menial positions.

There is a sense of judgmentalism here, a blanket assertion in place of something that should, I think, be individual, but looking at comments here there are obviously other black women who feel the same way.

Are you concerned about a calculated pretentious view or a truthful confession? Because to me, the article sounded more like the latter.

she mentions success because to many Black women it seems that to a Black man, reaching the pinnacle of success in America includes having a white woman on his arm....

she sounds ambiguous because she really is a loving soul, and it is hard to understand as a loving soul why anyone would want to hate you and not be with you because of your race and your sex....

yea man. and like, i'm looking on the other thread at some of the comments basically dismissing her as a racist and telling her to mind her own and all of that and its just DUDE if you would be open to the fact that she is trying to start a dialogue as to why it is she and others feel this way then maybe it could one day be eradicated. i hate reading an argument that "o well white people say basically the same things" um no they dont. the racist ones actively try to stop their own from dating outside, she doesnt go anywhere near that. further more they are not saddled with a history that puts their opposites on a pedestal to be praised while putting they're own down.

it's really sad that just because this is such a sensitive and tough issue that its being treated so cut and dry.

People need to stop bashing her, like seriously, I mean although I don't entirely care or agree with her, I see where's she's coming from, and its not like she wasn't neccessarily going "White women need to stop taking our black me." Sheesh, some people need a reality check.
