Love is love. You can't help who you're attracted to. I really wish people would stop judging others for who they choose to be with...

MY point is... nothing so superficial could keep a real couple together anyway, so perhaps her "wince" is a bit shallow and... "old-fashioned".

Jill Scott has had plenty of relationships and a marriage despite her size.

While people are free to choose whom they love, if you automatically rule a black woman out because she is black because of some perceived issue with us, it makes you an asshole.

Jill Scott is not a racist. This piece she wrote is about the above.

Jill says in a song "everyhing ain't for everybody". If what she said speaks to you, then you'll hear where she's coming from. If it ain't about you, keep the party movin'.

I have seen too many black men put black women down (especially on this fucking site) to dismiss what Jill is talking about.

Jill is speaking out against black men discriminating against black women. there is nothing wrong with that.

It's actually amusing how folks insist on trivializing and oversimplifying what she's actually saying and are instead branding HER a racist. Classic laughable org, lol

Non-black people please stop making comments about racial issues because you guys are ignorant as hell. Shut up because you don't know what you're talking about. Black women don't date outside their race as much as non-black women because many non-black people aren't insterested in having a serious relationship with a black woman. They may have sex with them, but marriage is out of the question.
I also don't understand how so many non-black females date/marry black men, but are still racist. The sad part is that these black men know that those broads are racist, but will hook up with them anyway. I guess they're so desperate to have light-skinnned/good hair kids that they will put up with trash. All mixed kids aren't cute, so they better be careful. Look at Tiger Woods and Rain Pryor.
Black people really don't care if you call them racist. You're just changing the subject because you know that racism is still around. If that makes you uncomfortable, we don't care.

clapping and lol
But didn't you know that non-black Orgers are the authorities on the black, American experience???
Maybe us black folks need to stop being so sensateeb because obviously our feelings are never valid. wink

i think you are totally out of left field with this post.

I totally get it tho. This is just ANOTHER example of when a black person tries to have a dialogue about their perspective on race people who are not black or share this experience break their fucking necks to call us racist or expound on how WE should feel about racial issue that impacts us and not them. So, I can understand the frustration because it's a common occurrence in this joint.

As far as Black women are concerned, it's not that simple. According to surveys and marriage records and what I see in real life, we are the least desirable mates for other races in the US. I mean, it's easy for me to say Jill should drop Black men altogether and date a Caucasian/non-Black dude, but what is not easy is actually finding one that is genuinely attracted to Black women. It's sad, but white/non-Black women are apparently the top choices for men, and that's where the resent comes from.....Black men can get an race they want, but the same cannot be said for Black women, for some strange reason.

I've heard that too. I've heard people I know say "I don't think I could date a black women" because either they're too thick or they would have to be "lightskinned" disbelief

I understand what Jill is trying to say but i agree with your last sentence,if
she gonna tell one side of the story, she needs to tell the other. Also Jill
needs to stop acting like interracial dating is just some new shit that just
started in 2000. Hell i live in South Carolina where there is plenty of racism
to go around but hell if you go to the flea market here it's not unusual to
see interracial couples walk around all day.

The numbers are NOWHERE near the same, so it's not apples to apples. Jill did not say she's against interracial dating anywhere in her statement. She is clearly speaking about feeling rejected by black men which is a sentiment a lot of black women share. Do black men feel like they've been rejected by black women in favor of white men? No cuz it ain't the same thing.

I hear you. If she would have made the statement in a specific arena like
pro sports, i would say she's probably right. As far as the general public,
interracial dating or marriage is nothing new and it hasn't been for sometimes
now.

Did you read her statement? She says in the first paragraph that this dude is an athlete. What you mean it ain't new? Open interracial dating/marriage was illegal in all states until recent history. But she's not even talking about that. Her point, I'll say it again, is about the rejection that she and a lot of women feel because many black men do not even consider us as viable mates. That's not an issue of, "Oops, I just happened to fall in love with a white woman." It's more like, ain't no way in hell I'ma be with black woman.

And as a black woman, and a dark one at that, who has had girlfriends of many races all my life I know EXACTLY what she's talking about. And no matter how open minded and accepting I am about the fact that all of my non-black girlfriends exclusively date black men it still hurts that EVERY time we go out most bruthas don't even give me a second look and have LITERALLY stepped on my feet to talk to my white, Mexican, and Asian homegirls. And that's been the reality for me for the 20 years that I've been going out and dating.

I'm not the least bit bitter about it cuz I gets mine. But for folks who will never have this experience to sit up here and judge her and her opinion when they don't know what it's like to stand in those shoes, is some bullshit and I have no problem saying so.

Meh.
When I was single if I saw a fine sister with a white guy I'd be pissed!

BUT it was because I wanted her NOT because the guy was white.
Unless you are interested in a particular person, getting upset because they're dating someone of another race is a waste of mental energy.

Wow...A woman who preaches so much love in her music disguises it with so much hatred. It's pathetic, really. It's not like SHE was a slave, which so many (like herself) seem 2 frequently and conveniently "hark back to" in order to drive their OWN obvious hatred home. She's obviously racist herself. I never ONCE looked at Jill Scott and "winced" at the sight of a large woman singing some of my favorite songs. I'm not like that. That's the problem with so many. They ARE like that. Furthermore, I'm a white brotha and if for ONE SECOND, I even voiced a similar remark, it would INSTANTLY go down as being racist, so Miss Jilly from Philly (and a whole lotta others like her) need 2 put themselves in "check." My Godmother's a Black woman. Never in my entire life, has she ever loved me less because I'm vanilla. She loves me for ME. I was also raised Jewish. I heard all that crap growin' up about "marrying your own kind," "dating outside your religion," etc...And y'know what? I always knew it was wrong. It's judgmental, it's hateful and it's prejudicial, no matter how you cut it up. Similarly, I wasn't one of those who crossed the River Jordan and/or was persecuted by any adversaries (except maybe in grade school when an occasional penney would be tossed my way as I walked on by.) Love is love no matter how u slice it up and love, has (or SHOULD have) no color. To think otherwise, is conditioning which is handed down and perpetuated throughout the ages. It's ignorant, it's intolerable and it's still here today. Miss Jill needs 2 shut her mouth and keep ugliness like this out of the public sector. It's not like she can afford to voice thoughts like these with her music sales steadily dwindling. I loved her "words and sounds." After reading this, I'm debating whether or not to toss all my CD's (by her) to the used record store for cash or credit. It spells racism and people have the audacity to wonder why it's still here. It's because of attitudes like hers. She wants 2 wince? She should record herself voicing the aformentioned hideousness and wince at that. And they say we're making progress? Where? Show me. I'm still seeing, hearing and reading it to this day. And what's there "to get?" Love has NO COLOR, afterall. Isn't that what I've always heard in MY life? I'll keep on perpetuating that belief, because it's beautiful and it's real and it doesn't reek of judgement. Beautifully Human, huh? Think again, You're showin' your TRUE colors and they ain't so pretty now. "Hate on me" if ya wanna, but you KNOW I'm right. Peace.

I was reluctant to read this for fear I'd be turned off by yet another artist I love based on personal views. But I actually think she voiced her feelings very well. I got what she was saying. She's not saying whites and blacks should not be together and she was very clear IMO that she realizes love can be found in many combinations. She is not negating any of that. The "bite" she mentions is part of her reality and a product of her life experience and we all have our own.

sometimes the Black man/white woman thing has nothing to do with love....

A lot of successful Black men have put "acquiring a white woman" on thier list like a trophy...I've got my benz, my house, my rolex, and my white wimmen....

Tiger Woods? You think he screws around on Elin with other white women because of love?

Those are the men Jill Scott is wincing at.....because sometimes you wonder if the choice had anything to do with love at all.

I'm all for love. I'm not mad at my gay Black brothas, as long as they are truly gay and also aren't playing the DL game. I'm not mad at love....if a man wants to be with White, Asian, Indian, Latin, brown yellow Puerto Rican and Haitian and even Hasian as my man Chingy would say knock yourselves out.

Just don't front and try to sugarcoat it as love, because real love wouldn't see color at all!
