I feel exactly what Erykah is saying in the video. I can see the double standards. Why can't a black woman have fun doing that like THIS white woman:

Erykah's nudity doesn't seem pointless or sexual IMO. As a matter of fact, its quite symbolic.
It could easily represent a journey through life - where she reveals more and more or herself or peels away her layers. You see the word "evolving" on her back at one point. The further she goes on her journey, the more she reveals of herself. Knowledge of self can also be intrepeted as knowledge of truth. The clothes represent the veils that people wrap themselves in during the course of life in general. To be in an evolved state, in a sense, would be like being like Adam and Eve. Not having shame or inhibition or fear of truth could be interpreted as being in an evolved state - having outgrown the social constrictions. She collapses in her video - which could symbolize death, which also symbolizes change - the conversion of the body back into matter. Changing after she has shed the social constrictions in life (represented by the clothes) and having evolved into a better being could be interpreted as her point. At lest, that's one way of looking at it (IMO).

I agree, but I thought she was assasinated?

That sound as she collapses, plus the beginning of the video, which sounds like a radio report assumingly from the day J.F.K. was assisinated... will have to watch it again.

I like this interpretation a lot - especially the idea of evolving through life being less about accumulating knowledge, and more about peeling back the layers, and being able to stand naked without fear.

I also thought, as well as her own personal 'journey', it's a comment on the nation's political journey - i.e. the seeming progress of electing a Black president that's been recently undercut by the vitriolic opposition to healthcare reform, and the Obama presidency in general, and the political and media 'assassination' of him over that. That, for me, is what makes the reference to JFK (and her hometown of Dallas) at the beginning, and the assassination scene at the end, a little unsettling, because it's playing-out a lingering nightmare scenario that's there just below the surface.

You're right. The camera pans to the building where the assassin fatally shot JFK.

It's artsy, so I like it. The ending's a bit too pretentious though.

I wonder if the Badu camp had seen the video linked above and took the idea from it. Badu's not as exploitative though and it doesn't look like the bypasers would be extras perfectly aware of what's happening.

Yeah. I thought the assassination worked; I just didn't like the monologue. I think I tend to find Erykah more convincing when she's asking the questions rather than giving the 'answers'. shrug

I love this record. How can you call a song like "Turn Me Away" not a song... "Fall In Love" not a song...

I think this album is great but I played some of the album for some friends and they were just like "yeah that first cut you played was nice" (which was Window Seat). confused

People said that about the last album too and I hear it as complete. shrug

Does anyone know what the little rhythm pad thingy she's playing in that clip is? You can see it more clearly here.

(P.S. I did notice her own 'equipment', too, of course.) batting eyes

Seems to be one of the AKAI MPCs. Hard to say which model exactly. Nothing exotic about those, they're very common in the R&B / hiphop -circles.

Ah, sorry, it might be two different pads in the two clips. I've seen the MPCs with the 16 pads; the one I was thinking of was the one with the big round pad that's here at 3:45. I wants me one of them!
