Concord OJC Remasters Dave Brubeck Quartet - Jazz at Oberlin (1953) Joe Pass - Virtuoso (1973) Sonny Rollins - Way Out West (1957) Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane (1961) An extension of the popular Original Jazz Classics series (est. 1982), the new OJC Remasters releases reveal the sonic benefits of 24-bit remastering--a technology that didn't exist when these titles were originally issued on compact disc. The addition of newly-written liner notes further enhances the illuminating quality of the OJC Remasters reissues, each an all-time jazz classic. http://www.concordmusicgr...romos/ojc/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Also included is this album... ...Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section It's unique for a few reasons. Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section is a mythic recording. The circumstances surrounding its genesis were first revealed in Pepper's steely autobiography Straight Life and reproduced countless times in articles and liner notes. Here it goes, one more time. On the morning of the recording session, January 19, 1957, Pepper's then-wife Diane informed him that she had secured an afternoon recording session with the Miles Davis rhythm section who were in Los Angeles appearing with Davis. Unhappily surprised and with a horn in bad need of repair, Pepper fixed an extra large amount of heroin and was off to the session. The music produced from this chaos has been described as "a diamond of recorded jazz history." http://www.allaboutjazz.c...p?id=10568 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The "rhythm section" referred to: Red Garland - piano Paul Chambers - bass Philly Joe Jones - drums Another reason is the time frame of the recording being so close to another classic session... ...Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet. Certain tracks on this recording were done approximately 2 months earlier than the Art Pepper album utilizing the same "rhythm section". This has set up a spirited debate in the stereophile/Jazz-head community concerning the corresponding recording engineers. Rudy Van Gelder - Relaxin' with The Miles Davis Quintet Roy DuNann - Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section It takes on an East Coast vs West Coast flavor with the more well known Rudy Van Gelder representing the East (Blue Note) and Roy DuNann in the West (Contemporary). Since these 2 recordings were done so close together date wise, they are used as prime comparisons in each camp's discussions. A few other DuNann engineered recordings: Barney Kessel - Kessel Plays Standards (1955) Shelly Manne & His Friends - My Fair Lady (1956) André Previn & Russ Freeman - Double Play! (1957) Victor Feldman - The Arrival of Victor Feldman (1958) Ornette Coleman - Something Else!!!! (1958) Sonny Rollins - Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders (1958) Benny Carter - Jazz Giant (1958) Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question! (1959) André Previn & His Pals - West Side Story (1959) Teddy Edwards - Teddy's Ready (1960) Hampton Hawes - At the Piano (1976) Ray Brown - Something for Lester (1979) For more information on Roy DuNann: The Search for Roy DuNann - http://www.stereophile.co...s/402roy/# Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
