Prince and Gino Vannelli Listen, I don't know if this tread has ever been made before but I have been having a Gino Vannelli obsession lately. Prince has always and will always be my musical hero, but now I have two and these two geniuses have so much in common it's unbelievable starting with:
The gist of the Gemini: Their birthdays are 10 days apart, both born on even years Gino in 52 and Prince in 58 Both fathers belong to jazz bands that rubbed off on their sons Both released albums back to back year after year, Gino up until 1978. Both artist can't not be catigorized to one type of music. The can do it all R&B,jazz, pop, rock all of it. Both have extraordinary musicians that back them up and the two live top acts. Both have voices that are a gift from God. Both have had battles with their record companies on how they wanted to do things their way. Both released only 1 album with Arista. Gino with Nightwalker. Prince with Rave. Both didn't become fathers until well into their 30s. Gino only has one son, Prince had a son, even though he didn't survive, he still had a son. Lastly, both are intensely private and are scandal-free. Even though Gino never went to superstar, I wish he too would've been inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame, won countless awards, etc. Because he is an diamond in the rough, just like Prince. I bet if you put those two in a room together and they got to talkin about the music business, they would have some stories to tell for hours. My two music heros: I love you.

I don't know Gino Vannelli, so I had to pull up some of his stuff on youtube and I think you are stretching it a bit to compare the 2.
In response to your comparisons... Prince scandal free?? That makes me laugh! Prince a diamond in the rough?? Honey - he is all diamonds & pearls. There is nothing rough about him! I will say that the one thing I see in common is their chest hair! I like John Legend and John Mayer, but I'm not trying to make their careers/lives parallel to Prince. Go ahead and have your heroes, though! xoxo

Well, that's three minutes of my life I'll never get back... We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I meant with everything going on with Tiger Woods, Sandra Bullock, and what MJ went through, I mean Prince has never been dragged through the tabloids and neither was Gino before he disappeared out of the spotlight. The diamond in the rough part. You're right he is diamonds and pearls.

Indeed. I wondered where all the immediate anti-Gino vitriol came from until I noticed this must have been posted in P:M&M originally. It appears that there's a certain segment there that would rewrite The Bible to read... In the beginning created the heaven and the earth. ... In any case, The Gist of the Gemini was one of my favorite Pop albums in the late 70s. ...Love Of My Life ...Omens Of Love ...Fly Into This Night (nice nip of the Bali Hai melody) A bit bombastic with goofy lyrics at times, but everybody needs a bit of that in their diet. Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I had heard Gino Vannelli's music but had never seen him so I didn't place his face with Bruno back then. Back then, when I saw Bruno, I immediately thought of Fink from Prince's band. I had seen him on the inner sleeve of the "Dirty Mind" album and in the "Uptown" video. Bruno reminded me of him because of the hair and because he was always behind the keyboards like Fink was.
