Does Anyone Here Listen To Reggae, Dancehall or Soca? This is probably a long shot, especially with the Soca, but I thought i'd ask anyway.
Does anyone listen to soca/dancehall/reggae? If so, what are the good songs that have come out for the year so far? I've searched, but haven't found much at all. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

I like Bob, Ziggy, Stephan, and Damian Marley. Sizzla, Berus Hamilton,Capelton, Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh, and various others. I have several "mixtapes". Heavy D released a reggae CD sometime ago...it was decent.

Bob Marley and Peter Tosh are some of my favourite artists ever but I don't really know much about reggae besides them. [Edited 3/23/10 9:55am]

I mostly listened to reggae though as this is my bf's favourite music and he is doing reggae himself too. I love old calypso, not the kind that they are playing now on the radio, there or in the States for that matter. Give me, Sparrow, Shadow, etc. That is real calypso. yeah. I kinda hate it. spending a lot of time in Hawaii in the last 5 years for months at a time for work pretty much cured me of any interest I might have ever had in this style of music.

I saw soca artist Alison Hinds opening for Jah Cure and I enjoyed it even though I thought I would not. While Jah Cure who seems to be the most popular artist in Trinidad right now was pretty boring live. I like some of his songs though. Reggae died about 30 years ago, around the same time as Marley's death coincidentally. It was replaced in the 80's by ragga and eventually in the 90's dancehall took over. Rap got fused with that to the point now where you can't tell the difference, but I do like some dancehall.
Soca will always bump it's music that makes you move your feet to the beat. Soca is to the caribbean what funk is to america and salsa & cumbia are to Latin America. The only problem I got with Soca which is a problem I have wih a couple dance music that originatd from the islands(salsa etc) is Latinos & west indians REALLY like to party, and in there parties they dance and party for like 6 hours until the sun comes up. Other than that it's cool. I'd say soca has the best dances I've seen, the wine, the frogback, and people think black ppl in america know how to dance! go to the Islands and they'll show you something. Did Prince ever deny he had sex with his sister? I believe not. So there U have it..

You are 100% Sandino, we in the Caribbean really know how to party. I love going to parties with my cousin's, dancing, eating, and drinking til dawn... I'm American, but my Family is West Indian and my Father is a big fan of people like Sparrow, Lord Kitchener, Black Wizard, Sugar Aloes, etc. so I'm really familiar with the music, but I haven't heard anything that great for the year so far though. I was looking for new stuff, but i'm open to anything good that I maybe haven't heard before. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
