She's both.

Many are familiar with the Ike & Tina or the 80s era comeback Tina.
She pretty much has been giving you variations on those sides through the years.
However, as a singer, when placed in a different setting, she still comes through because she's a PRO.

This is evidenced by her restrained yet sizzling take on Joni Mitchell's...

...Edith and the Kingpin

again, giving credibility to the org.

This is from Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters (2007)

Tina Turner is one of the greatest Soul singers of our time.

Perhaps I reflect my age, but that was amazing. I love Tina Turner more than ever - cuz it is some serious business to pull off a Joni cover.

I think she's great. She's got the female version of Rod Stewart's voice. Wait a minute, let me correct myself because she was around first. Rod has the male version of Tina's voice. lol

You haven't heard "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", the 1961 version?

I didn’t even want to entertain such a thread because I adore Tina. As already mentioned, Edith and the Kingpin, the rock of that album, is a great showcase of Ms. Turner’s vocals. She can turn it up or turn it down and she can do it live every time.

That was one of her best vocal moments. nod She is actually very diverse with her voice in a way she can sing R&B, soul, rock, pop and jazz. "River Deep Mountain High" was the perfect mixture of pop and soul (pop in the verses and the soul during the bridges).

That is one helluva song and she is perfect for it. She goes toe-to-toe with the wall of sound and owns it.

I believe some music teachers might be tempted to say "She's not a real singer, you know." I've never seen her live on stage where she's said to be at her best, nor have I really listened to her albums.

The old stuff she did with Ike Turner.. You can still smell the funk coming out of the speakers when you put on any of their records. I couldn't really say if she's a great singer or not. Some of her stuff just sound right and that's what counts. Obviously, she's no Aretha Franklin or Sade who are both doing their thang very well too.
