Lets focus on the true innovators of funk. Prince ain't one of 'em! I'm surprised that it hasn't been noted that for a change we are talking about 'real" musicians (people that play, write, sing and performed their own material), that is something that has been on the decline since the 80's. And I haven't forgotten about the ladies (Chaka, Betty Davis, etc) or deny their importance but the musicians made funk an art form and the bands should be recognized.

In terms of lineage and the range of influence, this would probably be my first group nominations:

James Brown
Sly Stone
Parliament Funkadelic
Isley Brothers
Kool And The Gang
Ohio Players

I'd say after James....Bootsy was more important in the development of FUNK than anyone on this list.

I'm confused.

I said that Prince had a large influence on funk in the 80s and you make a comment that does nothing to discredit that.

just because he isnt confined to one genre doesnt mean he isnt a part of funk history.

I don't recall saying that he wasn't a part of funk history. I said there were other artists more instrumental to the funk movement than Prince - and there ARE. See Paligap's list.

I was obviously referring to the 80s

Prince had a major influence on the sound of funk.

you cant disregard that just because of the era.

You're correct on that one! Larry Graham will definately be ahead of Bootsy and in an interview, even Bootsy admitted it as well.I'm a fan of both artists but not enough to put them the top six list. Anyway, congrats to Paligap!!

Well, Larry Graham obviously has been a major influence in funk history because he came up with the slap and did good with Sly and later with GCS.

Bootsy on the other hand was already there with James and went on with Parliafunkadelicment thang and his own solo career.

But making a funk list is hard because you are bound to leave some major people out, not only Larry and Bootsy but also Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder and Cameo. In my opinion, the first message of this thread has an alright list, except Prince ought to be replaced by The Meters.

I agree with you in that it may be hard to make a list that we all agree on,however, everyone seems to agree with the top three on the list and without them, funk may never had flourished and music would have been a lot different today!

Now thats enough funk to OD on! Too bad there is a lack of current innovative funk artists in the current decade. I think it's time for the old school to get off their ***** and start making up-to-date commercial funk again. It's sadly missed.
