AND I DID SAY LYN COLLINS! LMAO! Guess I gotta quote myself again. God, if the ORG is famous for anything besides snobbery and famdom, it's people forgetting to read threads carefully. I know so because I admit to it.

I SAID THIS PROBABLY TWO DAYS AGO!!!!! READ! And someone else mentioned them too. So much for "oh why you forgot them". Negro please. You lost this round, Blaque. [Edited 3/26/10 13:27pm]

I see I got a lot of response to this topic, but some of y'all are missing the true point. This is not a contest to see who gets in first. Second of all, I said 6 first inductees. Not 8 or 10. Please read what I said. Also, this rule is simple, I just put a starting list out on the table. Whatever you guys suggest or put on the list, the majority percentage rules overall. Since some of you guys like to expand this list then I would too. I would add 4 more to this list which would make 10 total. Are you happy now? Good. By the way, I created this topic and who gets in ultimately depends on me. And I see there's a lot of Prince haters on this subject on a Prince fan base line. Unbelievable! Anyway, the last 4 noms are:
7. Rick James 8. The Isley Brothers 9. Cameo 10. The Bar-Kays Peace and be wild!

Prince's earliest work wasn't groundbreakingly funky. Soft N Wet was funky but not compared to a lot of other artists' songs at the time. He deserves a mention, just not top 6. Sorry but he's not.

LoDog said: I'm the president of this election and I'm starting a Funk HOF. The rules are simple: You must've made some form of funk music. And you must have at least 2 albums to qualify for this Hall. Sorry, no one hit or one album wonders allowed. Just the true and pure funk artists. Since there's a limit amount of true funk artists out there, the first inauguration will feature 6 inductees. Each year after that 3 or 4. I know, I know! But what can you do for such a rare art form. So here's a list of who I think should be our first inductees:
1. James Brown 2. Sly & The Family Stone 3. Parliament-Funkadelic 4. Prince 5. Earth, Wind & Fire 6. The Ohio Players How's that for a list? Not a bad list at all! However, I would choose The Meters ahead of Prince but that's it. Making of a list is a tough job because we are bound to drop out several important acts. I might be tempted to even mention Bootsy Collins seperately, even when he's already a part of the Parliafunkadelicment thang and James Brown's band.

I agree with your top 10 except for Prince. I'm not a Prince hater, he just doesn't belong in the top 10. There are too many important bands/artists that had albums before he even received a contract.

Funk inspired everyone in music at the time and if you sonsabitchs don't put Herbie on this list, someone's gonna get cut.
No Dyke & the Blazers either? I forgot some still think Disco was FUNK...

Ms. Betty Davis definitely deserves a nod, no question, as well as my man, Jimi! Check her out around 5:02. Like Sly, James, & Jimi, Betty also influenced Jimi.

People are retroactively trying to re-write history. Did Miles Davis have some funky songs in his catalogue? Yes. Was Miles Davis a major enough of an influence on the funk scene to be put in a funk hall of fame? HELL NO. Sorry, that's the truth. Lots of jazz artists jumped on the funk bandwagon or incorporated funk into their sound but Miles was no funk artist.

If we were "hating" on Prince, he would've been an "afterthought" and he sure as hell ISN'T! But to me Prince is not one of the first names to come up when you say "FUNK". Plus Prince is a mixed bag of SOUNDS anyway so to put him in one box is actually mis-valuing him IMHO.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And Miles Davis was like Prince. A man whose sounds were a mixed bag and after all he's known internationally as a "jazz legend". He's also a legend of "fusion" music. So technically I wouldn't put him in there either.
