The Jackson 5 surely had a lot of copycats in the '70s. Their impact was so massive after 1969, 1970 that even their Chicago nemesis the Five Stairsteps did J5-styled songs around '71 lol

They sure did (I Love You-Stop), can't find the tune on youtube though. I heard that on some other site (Soul-Patrol I believe). It sounded exactly like "I Want You Back". And the lead singer was well into his 20s. I was like "wtf" when I first heard it

The other brothers (Clearance, Keni and James)voices were too deep and had changed ny 71-72. PRINCE: Always and Forever

TOO MANY Jackson 5 clones sound more like it. Brighter Side Of Darkness were the only group in that bunch that really put in the effort in being themselves.

How could I forget the original J5 rip-offs, started by Mr. Gordon Keith from Steeltown.
The Ripples & Waves + Michael, though the lead singer is not Michael. But GK wanted the public to think it was Michael. Obvious by the replies, you can tell some people think this is the J5. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Is it just me or does it sound creepy how they all sound almost exactly like little michael at times, but flawed cause one lacks the soul, the other lacks the passion, the other just can't hit the notes and so on? Kind of like how mj had copycats in the 80's with people like Alfonzo and then creepy looking impersonators later on LOL

Michael was a hard act to follow but some of these songs are so good that I bet that the J5 would have liked to record them first.

yeah I agree on that last part, though I'm sure some were offered to them and then given to the others

The Whitney Family: Glitter Child, the upload doesn't sound as clear as it should. Maybe, I'll upload some songs from this group.

i've heard that 'one bad apple' was offered to the j5 but they turned it down. i recall it being a big hit at the time for the osmonds, but it doesn't have the classic longevity of 'i want you back'. conversely, i heard that 'ben' was offered to donny but he turned it down. now it's a minor classic for mj (in a kind of campy way! )

Uh, the J5 were Gary-based, briefly recorded in Detroit for six months and then became Los Angeles-based from then on. Chicago Soul and Detroit Soul are two different sounds, don't get it twisted. And the Stairsteps DID sound J5-esque in that song I mentioned.

All those MJ clones in the late '60s and early '70s, no wonder by 1974, people like Don Cornelius and EBONY were already calling Michael a LEGEND! HE WASN'T EVEN 18 YET!
You probably can't see it real good but it does say on the bottom right hand side, "WHY MICHAEL JACKSON IS A LEGEND". lol [Edited 3/29/10 9:33am]

note: For Historical Accuracy - The Sylvers didn't come after the Jackson 5 they're contemporaries. People compare them because like the Jackson's they were a family group and it's was bunch of them. The Sylvers and the Jackson's were in many aspects at different ends of the Soul/R&B spectrum. The Sylvers sound was more akin to the 5th Dimension than the Jackson 5.

===== Umm what do you mean by that? Please elaborate. The Sylvers are more akin to the 5th Dimension sound because like the 5th Dimension, the Sylvers consisted of men and women, singing in various combinations -which include a great deal of harmonizing.. In many cases unless you look at the Sylvers albums liner notes, it's hard to discern who's singing lead Leon, Edmund or Ricky. The Sylvers sound was more rooted in straight up Soul at the begining of their careers where as the 5th Dimenision had more of a pop sound. ===== [Edited 3/29/10 19:22pm]
