80s R&B flashback: "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone" by Ray Parker Jr (1987)

In 1987,alot of interesting things were happening in the R&B world. It was the year in which many R&B "old schoolers" made comebacks. Many of these artists/bands had been away for awhile, without a hit for several years.Earth Wind and Fire reunited for their well-received 'Touch The World' album. The O'Jays reunited with producers Gamble and Huff for the #1 R&B hit "Lovin You".Donna Summer was back on the scene with the Brenda Russell-written "Dinner With Gershwin".Ray Parker Jr. came back strong in '87,with his best solo album yet 'After Dark',featuring the intoxicating first single "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone",arguably his most soulful single.

Yeah,I love this song.It was refreshing to hear something like this from him after several years of lightweight pop stuff like "Ghostbusters" and "Girls Are More Fun".

I never liked this song in 87. I guess because I was so upset with him for give me that cheezy ass "Ghostbusters". lol

Later in life, I started to like this song. It is a great song.

I can't see the clip but the title sounds familiar. I remember Ray Parker, Jr. doing something in the late 1980s though and I also remember not liking it. lol

I think 'After Dark' is Ray's best solo album....

I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone
Over You (duet with Natalie Cole)
Lovin' You
You Shoulda Kept A Spare
The Past
You Make My Nature Dance
Perfect Lovers
After Midnite
I Love Your Daughter
After Dark

A perfect album from beginning to end.The aforementioned single "I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone" is Ray at his soulful best."Over You" is a superb duet with Natalie Cole that became the second single."You Shoulda Kept A Spare" is a fun midtempo number in which Ray gives out some good advice to the ladies (he loves to do songs like this, lol)."Perfect Lovers"is quiet storm heaven,as is the hypnotic instrumental "After Midnite"."I Love Your Daughter" is another standout.I'm sure you can figure out what that song is about, lol.Ray has always done humorous songs about relationships, falling in love, etc. Then there's the title track...a naughty, cleverly written jam that would have made a strong third single. The cool thing about this album is,there's no lightweight pop stuff here. This is a solid R&B album. There are a few adult contemporary numbers but even these tunes are very good.A few tracks even remind me of the stuff he did with Raydio.

I know. That was part of the reason I didn't care for the song in the beginning. It wasn't until I got "grown" that I learned to appreciate it.

Great review and I pretty much agree with all of this. Very classy album. And even though I dug his poppy "sex and the single man" LP and his newjack one called "love you like you are", I still dig this one more.
