I'm working on a research paper regarding genres and their limited use in 2010. I'll spare you the synopsis

Currently looking for examples of mega-successful artists/bands who were, at the time they scored their first record deal, seen as a big risk for the record company. This is one of those things I've read about dozens of times but can't think of any at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
