My point is:

If Madonna's compilation could sell double Janet's in the US, with all the same obstacles of digital downloading and pirating...

If MJ could still sell so much despite being commonly regarded as a childmolestor (a criminal of the worst degree)....

The commonly used excuses for Janet just don't hold up for me...

We'll agree to disagree. Truce? hug

MJ has always had a bigger fanbase and has always been recognizable. I don't know why you brought him up. The same can be said for Madonna. She has always been more popular. So that's not a fair comparison. If SB didn't help Janet's sells then. It won't help now. She won't have this comeback or whatever. I don't know what your point is.

Janet was more popular than Madonna and MJ in the US for many many years. Didn't u agree with that a couple weeks ago? She consistently ousold them both for over a decade.

Rythm Nation outsold Like A Prayer/Erotica combined
janet. outsold Bedtime Stories and Dangerous
The Velvert Rope outsold Evita and HIStory
All For U outsold Music and Invincible
Damita Jo outsold American Life

How were they more popualr than her? We're dealing with the Us, right? Lets not re-write the story to fit into what we're tryin to argue now. Janet was consistently more popular for over a decade. What's ur explanation...?

Milli Vanilli... I don't know about them... they got lucky as far as I know. The one that should've been blackballed was Frank Farian for thinking he could get away with it. Apparently he got away with it twice and used those two. Plus money was on their minds. I think the backlash was quite cruel to them though.

And Wesley... hmm... to me it seems like he made the bed he's lying in now due to the tax shit... shrug

milli vanilli strikes me as a sad an entry to the list as oj or washington.

they might not have killed anyone or called people faggots, but... they made that bed, they can lie in it.

wesley... i don't know. i dont know anything about the black women quote, but i do find it difficult to believe blade: trinity ruined him so much as making some really terrible choices of which movies to do.

Actually Wesley's problems started way before the tax shit...When you go to war with a big film studio you are bound to get fucked...There's a reason why dude suddenly started doing straight to dvd movies after that last Blade movie...Hollywood banned dude....I'm glad he's back with Brooklyn's Finest...

I'm gonna say something re: Snipes that I am not 100 percent sure about but I have often wondered if Snipe's appeal within his target market was hurt by:

I've always felt he was a leader within the LGBT community for taking on this role and that he doesn't get the credit for it. He was one of the biggest action stars at the time and took on this role and within a few years his career was in the toilet. Is it just a coincidence? This I know, Tom Cruise or Harrison Ford (his counterparts at the time) would never have taken on such a role.

nod But it was Snipes who took the risk. Swazye's career was already in the toilet and Leguizamo wasn't (nor is he now) bankable. Snipes, at the time, was at the top of his career.

I understand what you're saying but I disagree.

Janet's main market has always been America. It has NEVER been overseas leave that for her brother, who was the total opposite. The same can be said for Madonna and a few others. Her career hurt gratefully because of the Superbowl. Yes, she's an aging pop star and of course, ageism is a focus in America. But to say the Superbowl hurt her career a little is pure bullshit.
[Edited 3/17/10 20:22pm]

SB didn't destroy her career. Its the bad decisions made after the fact that did her in.

Anybody can bounce back from anything, and its very true, believe me. Ppl can forgive ANYTHIN, u just have to give them what they want and say the right things.

... as for overseas... no she has never been on MJ/Madonna level, but how do u ratinalize Janet's inability to even reach silver status in most countries? Thats like selling 200k in the US. Do u know how low that is? SB has little to do with it... had she focused overseas, she wouldnt have flopped so badly at all. It was mismanagement.

That's what I always said. Due to the fact that every country in Europe was LAUGHING at the over-reaction in the USA to the Superbowl, it was Janet's prime opportunity to go over and re-invent herself to take advantage of the foreign markets. She didn't and spent about a year trying to weed her way back in with America. And I personally thought Damita Jo was a good album - much much better than All For You. It could have been a success. 20 Y.O is what really killed her career as I can't think of one redeeming thing about that one.
